Weather

Well they always say there are rarely more than two hot days together in an English Summer.  Well here in North Yorkshire the last two days have been pleasantly warm and sunny but today I wake up to dull, cloudy conditions with a light rain falling.   But much preferable to the weather in Coverack in Cornwall - a really desirable holiday destination just gearing up for the season.

In the village last night they had a flash flood with the river rushing through four feet above normal.   It was all over in minutes but holiday lets and residents' houses alike were flooded.   The Dunkirk spirit seems to have prevailed and the villagers assure holidaymakers that all will be back to normal in double quick time.   Let's hope so - the holiday industry is the main source of income down there and also of course many people are looking forward to their holiday break.

Two hours of hard work last night at our Ukulele practice evening - very enjoyable but intense concentration needed.   Today I am out to lunch with friend D - we meet about once each month to catch up on our news.   That is the extent of my activity today so I may well pack a few more boxes, although I have nearly reached the stage where I can afford to relax until I get a firm moving date and then bring in a few helpers.   If I am not careful I pack something and then realise I need it (e.g. shoe cleaning kit).

The weather was brilliant, wasn't it? My sister even bought a little hat for our walks in the sun, something she'd never expect to do here in Yorkshire. Back home in Germany, I hear they've had 34 Celsius yesterday.
It is not raining here yet in Ripon (8:30 in the morning), but it certainly is cooler than yesterday and we have a grey cloudy sky.
Well done on the ukulele practice! I trust you'll be still able to go there after your move?

We had thunder and lightening here ( Herts) last evening and a bit more in the night. Accompanied by heavy rain. The garden must have heaved a sigh of relief to get some decent water at last! It is actually warmer this morning, which I am not too pleased about. I thought storms were supposed to clear the air!
I hope that you get a moving date soon....it must be very unsettling not knowing when you are to go. X

We had storms all night and lots of rain. Not very good in harvest time if you are an arable farmer. You do well to go to a two hour evening music practice.

We obviously got off lightly with regard to the thunderstorms. I woke just after 3am this morning and heard distant thunder. There was some lightning and lovely rain but the storm must have passed south of us. So much work for those owners of holiday accommodation when they probably thought everything was ready to go.
I have been rather too keen with my packing for removal and have had to open two or three boxes! I hope to hear of a completion date in another week or two. Enjoy your lunch out.

There was a fantastic and violent storm here in North Kent at 02.30 this morning, with torrential rain for a while. Like Frances said, the garden must be well pleased, I know I am. The humidity on the nature reserve this morning was really intense, like walking round in a sauna.

One day in the not too distant future, I hope you will post a video clip of you playing your ukulele and singing....

Oh, she's absolutely wonderful, and marvellous and beautiful.
And anyone can understand why,
I'm leaning on a lamp-post at the corner of the street
In case a certain little lady passes by.

It's been wonderfully warm here the last couple of days. We've had the paddling pool out and it's been what Summer days are all about.
It must have been a dreadful shock for those in Coverack, thank goodness no one was hurt. X

Seeing Rachel's comment above about the harvest, I think that most farmers will say that you shouldn't be in farming if things such as that get you down. Talking to an arable farmer this morning alongside the reserve, about last night's storm, he simply shrugged and said "that's farming". A lot of the wheat that they grow these days is of a shorter stemmed variety as well, which means that it doesn't get flattened by wind and rain so easily.

It has cooled down to the 80's here, lots of rain though.

This week in NYC is one with humidity increasing daily along with the heat. So far, at Wednesday, it's not unbearable, but does tend to sap some energy. When I visit the farmers market later this morning, I will have to ask some of the farmers how this summer's weather is helping or hindering the crops.

Before I forget, I wanted to mention how interesting your Quaker Meetings sound. I wonder if anyone can attend? xo

Talking amongst themselves the arable farmers will curse the rain. Talking to Derek Faulkner they will shrug it off.

I never knew a farmer who worried about clean shoes. Bit of spit and a rag and you'll do ok Pat. I hope you've got rid of ironing board. ;)

The West Country's coastal areas seem particularly prone to these sudden, flash floods.

Oh, Weave, I cannot recall last cleaning my shoes!

How much longer? I well remember having to unpack boxes.... Weather changed here too, windy and grey. Rain tomorrow. But I am fine with that easier to breathe.

Well since the weekend farm vehicles have been rushing past with bales of straw, silage and wheat but the rain has set in today. This time of the year the holiday coaches also appear on the back run to a local amenity so our road is busy in summer.
