Food Festival.

Our little market town is hosting a Food Festival today and tomorrow.   There has been a food festival here for a few years but it folded after last year's.   Then someone had the idea of having a reduced event, using the market squares in the centre of the town.

This morning friend W and I went in for our usual cup of coffee and then had a walk round the stalls.
There were a lot of cake stalls - tray bakes and the like - all very tempting, with delicious flavours.   There were quite a few cheese stalls - what a huge
variety of different cheese you can buy these days.
Then a smattering of the rest - meats, fish (kippers smelt delicious,  smoked salmon samples tasted delicious, various drinks, honey, preserves - the square was not completely full but there were enough to make a visit worthwhile.

There was one stall where a young lady displayed her home made and decorated cakes (weddings, birthdays, special occasions).   They were really impressive.   Here are a few examples to make your mouth water:

There's a dissected scotch egg on that last cake! Don't let John Gray see it or he'll be drooling all over his keyboard.

Oh yum, that last tray has lots of delicious foods on it. Maybe one day I will try a Scotch egg that John Gray enjoys so much. I've not seen any here in California.

I love the wedding cakes and the special occasion cakes girl. They look just that little bit different and I like that. I hope she took some orders today.

Oh, my goodness!
That last one is AMAZING!
And, while I'm sure I've missed something about Scotch Eggs, I DO know they are truly delectable.
I wish the food festival well.

Weaver, I know how much work and planning goes into organizing such an event, and also the hopes of the participants that folks will attend the event and be enchanted by what those visitors see.

It's a bit of a fragile mix. Looks like the weather gods were favorable! I would definitely bought one of those cakes!

Please do let us know how successful this event was, and if another follow up event will take place this summer. xo

What a neat festival! Decorating cakes has really taken off recently. Do you get the tv show, Cake Boss, in the UK? It follows an Italian (American born) baker and his family business in New York and you see a lot of theme related cakes, all done with that fondant icing. Did you end up buying anything? -Jenn

A lovely event, and I hope the stall holders had plenty of customers so that they will keep the Food Fair going.
Changing the subject - have you come across the books of John Lewis-Stempel? One critic likens him to Richard Deakin so I think you may enjoy his books. I have just read Meadowland - The Private Life of and English Field, and am now reading The Running Hare which tells of his attempt to grow the right wild flowers and plants in a rundown meadow in order to encourage hares to breed there. I am enjoying both immensely and thought of you when I came across them.

Barbara - Scotch eggs are hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat and then deep fried. John (Going Gently) has a deep love for them and is also trying to lose weight. The two ideas do not go together.

What a lovely market - it would be so much fun to wander about. The cakes are amazing - I'd love to order one for a summer celebration. I had never heard of scotch eggs until you recently began talking about them - so I had to look them up - they sound good - we don't have anything even the least bit close to that in the US.
