A satisfying morning.

We have a courtesy car while our Body Work is being done - in fact our car is ready for collection but the garage is closed until Tuesday.   So we are not really venturing far.   In any case, after that glorious Spring day yesterday, today is windy, cloudy and cold.  Storm Katie is on its way and the wind has arrived already.   Spare a thought for Yorkshire Pudding (on my side bar) who should be crossing the Irish Sea from the Isle of Man this morning.  He will need his seasickness pills I think.

So, I have taken the opportunity this morning to do two jobs which have been bugging me for weeks, but which I have kept putting off (never a good idea).   The first was to balance the ledger.   It is our farm financial year end at the beginning of April and I like to send the ledgers to our accountant added up and balanced.   I have to be in the right mood to do this otherwise I can add it up a dozen times (and yes I do mean with a calculator) and get a different answer each time.   So this morning, after the usual household jobs, I sat down with the ledger, spoke firmly to it - and myself - and it balanced first time.   First job done.

Then the post came.  In the post was my Country Living Magazine (which my god-daughter buys me on subscription each year).  No, the temptation was to sit down and have a look over a coffee.   But another job was calling loudly.

Does everybody have a drawer somewhere into which they put things that haven't got a place anywhere else?   Things like paper clips, elastic bands (I wonder how much the Post Office spend on elastic bands - many of which come through our letter box with our morning mail), batteries for various things, spare bulbs for Christmas tree lights, - these are just a few of the things which needed sorting out.

Jumping in at the deep end I tipped the drawer out on to the kitchen table.   The paper clips were collected up and put where they should have been put in the first place - in the paper clip box in my desk.   The elastic bands were put into a plastic bag, same with the curtain hooks - and so on.   Now the drawer is tidy.   Two jobs done in one morning and now it is time to get the lunch - so I am feeling rather pleased with my morning's work.   What have you all been doing - something more exciting I hope.

I'm with you on both jobs - we run a business, and every month paperwork stares at me until I'm in the right frame of mind to tackle it, and the drawer into which things get shoved, well, at least I know where something is likely to be!

Actually, I enjoy tidying the "junk' drawers. There are three of them, in a chest in the front entry. I keep children's games there, and some miscellaneous things I need to store. My brother-in-law, the hoarder, constantly adds his detritus. When the drawers are too heavy to open easily, I collect out all his trash (24 C cell batteries at half a pound a piece!) and spread it out on the steps upstairs, for my sister to deal with.

Time for feet up and a look through Country Living for you I think. My kitchen 'junk' drawer is supposed to be for freezer bags and waxed paper from cereal packets, but all sorts of other bits and pieces find their way in there.
I have just treated myself to some new fibre tipped pens so will probably play with them this afternoon as it is not at all pleasant outside.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.

Well done on balancing the ledger first time! Today is the day to mop the kitchen; easily done since it is so small. I think I will clean the 4 kitchen windows too. I can already hear the sea calling me to come and play on this hot sunny day, so that will be my reward.

It's called "the junk drawer" in our house, as well. In ours is also a large collection of keys, extra shoelaces, the phone book, tape, and fridge magnets. Well done balancing the books, a job that I am very glad I don't have to deal with! -Jenn

Well, not as fun as the magazine, but probably much more satisfying. Well done. I tend to procrastinate on things like that. Like blogging instead of doing.

I have a drawer filled to the brim with painkiller packets with only two left in each one. Friends call it my suicide drawer.

Yes i have one of those drawers...lol I call it my 'junk drawer'... and i have to be careful that it doesn't over flow into a second drawer... paperclips , rubber bands, pens ,pencils, batteries...you name it... Hmmmm... maybe the Post Office would like the rubber bands back to reuse?? Hugs! deb

I know the jobs you mean, Mac has been dealing with the taxes, due by April 15 and I'd recognize that drawer anywhere.

I don't have drawers like these now having had to go through my mother's junk drawers when she died, years and years of accumulated "rubbish". I try to keep everything on the move, if it isn't needed and can be thrown out now then out it goes and if I don't need it and someone else does I give it away. I can't bear the thought of someone having to do this for me so I do it as I go along.

If I tidy up I can't find anything afterwards. I have tidied up my sock drawers and underwear and tshirts and other clothes but I have had to label the the drawers so I know which to open. When it was chaos I seemed to have no problem. I'd find things as if by instinct. Doubtless everything will revert to normal before long. This morning I went for a 10 km run and had a shower. Then I had a walk and before I knew it it was time to think about lunch.

I need to go through some of my drawers - they got done when we first decided to put the house on the market, but since that is several years back now they need doing again. My daughters would despair if they ever had to go through my craft stashes too, so I could do with sorting out what I am never going to use - hard though that will be.

It sounds like you had a satisfying day anyway, and keep safe if Storm Katie heads your way.

Rather sad morning for me. We to thehamish to a meet and greet with another dog. thehamish was terrific and the other dog just barked, snapped and growled the whole time at him.
We are crushed. We thought we had found a friend for thehamish.

cheers, parsnip

Such a good, satisfying feeling, isn't it, when we do such jobs! I'll probably have quite a bit of that once I start the redecorating of my flat and the swap of bedroom and living room.
It's been a great weekend for me so far, had a houseguest until about 2 hours ago and we went on a 5-hour-walk yesterday, when it was so sunny and mild I couldn't trust it and was dressed way too warm.

What is it about 'junk drawers?' [A rhetorical question, for sure!] One was established here almost before the kitchen was renovated and settled, a second one is happening without my approval.
Then there is the drawer in an antique side table which I daresay has a few oddments that moved across country and back. While I do rummage through and discard from time to time, tipping one out onto the table would be too daunting! You deserve a medal!
