An outing.

Friend W and I to Kirby Lonsdale today through the most beautiful countryside in the UK on the most beautiful day of the year.   Everywhere looked wonderful and we agreed that we were very lucky to live up here in such a beautiful place.  As we passed the hill of Addlebrough in Wensleydale we were chatting about the fact that there was once an Iceni tribe living on the summit.  How much or how little will the surrounding countryside have changed?   Of course the field systems would not have been there, and there would no doubt have been far more woodland but the view would no doubt have been just as stupendous.

Meeting our friends P and D we walked to our favourite Italian restaurant for our favourite lunches.   We have been going for so long now that we know exactly what we want before we read the menu.  Their Caesar salad is excellent, as are all their pasta dishes.

Ingleborough looked magnificent in the clear sky.  It is not often we see it in all its glory; so often the top is obscured by cloud.

We arrived home at around four o'clock having had a lovely day out and feeling we didn't need any more to eat until tomorrow.

I do like the looks of those lunch selections, and also thank you for introducing me to a new word, Iceni. I'd never before known of this tribe or its historic role.

So suddenly much more hot and humid here today. So far a promised thunderstorm has passed us by. Some items were crossed off my errand list...but somehow Ice Cream Cone is still right there at the top of the list. Maybe tomorrow morning.

Best wishes.

The lunch selections look so tempting, I don't know how you made up your mind!
...and I love your scenery! Sounds like a lovely day.

Maybe the Caesar Salad was forced on the Iceni by ... err... no, never mind.

You do well for yourselves up there; don't you!

There would have been field systems by the time of the Iceni. They might not have been all that different either! What would have been different were the sheep - they'd have had a breed much more like Jacob's.

Are you sure they were Iceni, not Brigantes?

Beautiful view and the food looks glorious. There may not have been all that much more woodland in the Iron Age/ Roman times- woodland cover in the UK had fallen to 50% 2500 years ago and was down to 15% by 1086. It's not yet back at that level- currently stands at around 12%. (Ecology head on in preparation for returning to Uni in a few weeks!) :o)

A glorious view of beautiful unspoilt countryside. I am always heartened by a view that looks as if it may not have changed for centuries.
The lunches look pretty good too, and I'm guessing they tasted as good as they looked. Healthy too.
So pleased you had the perfect weather for your lunch trip. It does add to the enjoyment, doesn't it?

My mother came to the US from England as a WWII war bride. Since she died two years ago, I have been longing to go back to England to see my family.
In my mind, I have been planning all the places that I want to visit. My daughter and I want to rent a car, and see more of England than we have ever seen before. You have made me want to see your part of the country now.

Well whether they were the Iceni or the Brigantes, I was only reading about them yesterday funnily enough. Cartimandu (Brigantes) ditched her husband and went off with someone else, also betraying Caracactus to the Romans. Also maybe the 9th Roman Legion got wiped out at this point as well, must read Rosemary Sutcliffe on that.....
All that food looks delicious by the way.
