Saturday

This post is going on early today as I sit here waiting for the thirty minutes 'simmering time' for my ham before I transfer it to the bottom oven of my Aga.   Friend W had given me a nice recipe for roasting it entirely but I find on reading my Aga book that the oven is probably too hot to do that, so it is recommended I simmer it slowly and then roast it for a little while at the end, which is what I am doing.

Friends are coming tomorrow and staying overnight.  I am trying to get well-prepared so that I can spend time chatting to them rather than doing things in the kitchen.   They are driving over from the Lakes and the weather forecast for tomorrow suggests there may be snow coming in from the West so I am hoping they beat it all the way here.

Mind you, snow is relative isn't it?   I was speaking by telephone to a friend in Boston (Mass) last evening - they have eight feet (yes, I did say eight feet) of snow and another storm is forecast for today when another four feet could accumulate.   They seemed quite matter of fact about it, saying that as long as they kept the path to the front door clear the mail would be delivered.

I think we over here get in too much of a panic about snow.   I remember  waking up in Moscow to a very heavy snowfall and going out to find the roads quite clear.   Eventually our bus came up behind the reason - a giant snow-blower was sucking up the snow and throwing it into the Moscow River.

So far today (9.17am) it is a lovely sunny day with a light breeze.   I suspect a very cold wind but at present I don't intend to open the door to find out (I am still clad in a dressing gown).

Enjoy your Saturday.

Snow is relative indeed. We had only one day of snow and half the country was closed. No schools no transportation.

Snow that deep sounds scary. I mean REALLY scary. Or, rather, I would be really scared in it!

Do you think that our cold damp air plus snow causes all our problems? I have heard that in parts of Canada and USA their cold weather is much drier than ours. They are certainly better geared for severe winters than we are. Enjoy your weekend.

Wall to wall sunshine here at the moment, going for a character building walk soon. Enjoy your friend's visit.

Snow is ok when you don't have to go out in it. I hate having to drive up the motorway before they do any gritting so I can get to work.

Ah, the Aga! I had never seen one until we stayed at a B&B in Thirsk. What a fantastic stove. I looked them up once to price them and decided that I can live with my 1913 Home Comfort Wood Range. lol Hope you get a great ham and have a wonderful time with company.

The trouble with snow and other forms of bad weather is that when they happen in areas where it's expected they know how to handle it and it's not a problem.
Down here in the south we're never prepared for bad weather and when we get some it's scary.

Love reading your blog. I live near Boston and please don't worry about your friend as you must have misunderstood we are only to get another 4 inches, not feet! While this winter has been difficult due to getting the snow in large amounts at a time rather than lots of smaller storms, thankfully we have the equipment needed to deal with it.

About 10 years ago I couldn't get the car up the hill because of the snow so I left it in a side street halfway up. A few days later I decided to see if all was OK but I couldn't find it. All the parked cars down one side of the street were completely covered with snow.

I hope you had a lovely visit and a lovely ham. It still is snowing here in NE Ohio; the children have been off school two days and I'm wondering about Monday, when they will wake up to ten below zero. I believe the groundhog is using the wrong calendar.

Snow is relative and one should know how to deal with it by now.
For me it is living through summer and the extremely high temps. One should be able to just get on with it.
But secretly I envy the snow. We didn't have enough rain or snow this winter, Boston has too much we had to little.

cheers, parsnip

Meanwhile we are battered down for a weekend of 37•C - still milder though than the 47•C we had one summer and they experience in other parts of Australia.

Have you ever tried Nigella's Ham cooked in Coca Cola? It's worth looking at, and sounds fabulous.

No snow so far (10am Sunday) - just a bit on the dull side. Yes Cro, I did try the ham in coca cola once - very nice, although a bit on the sweet side for me. Thanks for popping over to read my blog everyone.
