Winter.

It seems that Winter has more or less arrived.   I know that officially it doesn't start until the 21st December, but today is a typical Winter's Day and I hate it, especially as it is only November.   A day like this at the end of February is to be tolerated because you know Winter is almost over.

November 25th - a dull, dark day - never getting even a vestige of daylight.   A deep mist cloaks everything and hangs low in the fields leaving its taint on the cobwebs which hang heavy in the hedgerow.

Everythings looks to have gone into hibernation.   Even the rabbits seem to be absent from the fields, although they must come out to eat at some point.   The hens, who could spend the day happily in the hen house in their clean, fresh straw, choose to come out into the farm yard and stand about in small bedraggled clusters, heads down, thoroughly miserable.

In our little town the Christmassy windows of the shops are making an effort to cheer the place upbut there is hardly a soul about to appreciate it.

Our wood burner is out of action for a couple of days as we wait for a new glass (the farmer was adding the new bits he had bought and he accidentally dropped the glass, so we are waiting for a replacement which should be here tomorrow) so we have the central heating on - not the same without that lovely red glow.

All the cattle have gone now and the fields are empty and forlorn - and they will stay like this until Spring - which I must say seems a long way off today.

We have a heavy mist here too this morning but not the bitter cold you do so i'am loving the mist. Its quite beautiful as the sun is coming up. It promises to be a day in the 70's which is quite warm even for here on Thanksgiving.... Everyone else is still in bed...I'am up having a cup of coffee. Most of the cooking for the big day was done yesterday...... a trick we've learned in recent years... that way we can relax more with friends and family. Well i'm going to go poke my head in the craft room and see if i can paint a little bit before everyone wakes up.. Hugs! deb

It's been a bit drear and dismal, hasn't it. I'm glad I got out on Monday as it's barely got light since!

Somtimes I wish that we have winter like yours , especially after reading your literay description of the day.

In spite of a fresh overnight snowfall I'm feeling the gloom here. The skies are not bright, although the snow is white. But, the bird feeders are full and they seem quite pleased with the feast.

I do hope some light breaks through the gloom for you tomorrow. We had a very grey and misty start but the sun managed to struggle through eventually after lunch. At least it hasn't poured with rain or been too slippery to venture outside. You'll be cosy again when the woodburner is back in action.

Your second paragraph really set a scene. It has been fairly dull here in Herts. lately, though it was quite bright for a short while this afternoon. Night fell very early though. I love it when the cobwebs are covered in dewy fog, and am always amazed at how many there are that we don't normally see! Hope you get your log fire going soon, we only have radiators, and I love the log burner when we go next door to friends.

It's been a grey, wet dreary day up here today, lots of mist and low cloud. We had our school Christmas fayre today and that cheered us all up no end :)

And yet just from your description I wish I could see it.
We have blue skies and will be in the 80s all weekend.
I think our winter will be coming next week.

cheers, parsnip

Your dreary day sounds lovely, here we are going into what threatens to be along hot dry summer. I think I could cope better with your winter than ours.We are all different and each part of the world has its problems.

Winter will be here soon but it hasn't arrived yet in the east, today was very mild and bright and beautiful.

I noticed you used the word accidentally in your report. Very diplomatic. You and your farmer are obviously made for each other. The fog will soon pass. The bright winter days with icicles and blue skies are waiting to arrive. No need to rush into Spring.

If I believe our weather forecast, our winter arrives next week.

I would have thought that your wood burner would work very well without the glass..... ours does with the door open.

Time for some really good books!

I feel the same way about winter, Weaver. I don't remember feeling that way when I was young. Seed catalogs are coming and that helps a bit.

Gwil's comment made me laugh - but as David said 'it simply came to pieces in my hand!'. New glass in and burner back again - lovely to welcome an old friend.

Thanks for calling in.
