New hens and other things.

The six new hens arrived last evening, just as darkness was falling.   Their side of the hen house was separate and they went in quite happily and started eating their food.   They are still very young and the farmer predicts it will be almost a couple of months before they are of a laying age.   The cockerel has not seen them yet - they need a few days to acclimatise before they come out into the big wide world - we have such an expanse of fields and no enclosed space in which they can wander, so best to keep them in.   Meanwhile the farmer is doing hasty repairs to a wire pen so that it can go over the pop hole and they can come in and out into the sunshine if they so wish (hope it doesn't pour with rain).

This morning friend W and I decided we would try the new Pilates class for Beginners.   Wow!   We came home after the hour exhausted, aching and with pains in muscles we didn't even know we had.   We have already decided that it is too strenuous for us - even getting up and down on the exercise mat requires real concentration on my part.    However, I shall keep my exercise mat out on the spare bedroom floor so that I can do my daily, much gentler floor exercises - they really do keep me more supple.

Tomorrow another visit to the Orthopaedic specialist who is looking in to possible treatments for my ankle.

Quite Spring-like here today - now some snow on high ground is forecast for the weekend.   Still by then it will be March - so let it snow if it wants to - not like snow falling in November is it?

I have heard the U.K. has been have wonderful signs of Spring lately , at least the rain brought a few good things with it. We are still quite cold here in New England ! no signs yet. yet I must even in 20 degree weather I found an egg between the cubby in the hay bails this morning , it was light blue so I know one of the Americana hens has started laying ~ I suppose I could call that a sign of Spring if I stretched it :)
Nice to hear you have a new flock.

Once March arrives we know it's nearly spring, even if the weather doesn't! Looking forward to 'meeting' the hens when they are ready for the wide world.
I have never tried Pilates but can't even do my gentle Tai Chi warm-up exercises until my leg is better.
Hope you get some good treatment for your ankle, then only one of us will be an old crock!

Yes, I do gentle exercise on the floor. Just getting up and down, stretching a bit. Now I got "Miracle Balls" small squishy balls that one lays on and breathes while they release tension and loosen tight muscles and connective tissue. I love doing it, and now have a rolled up mat to simply roll across as a passive massage with great effects. Kitty enjoys joining me.

You are great to your animals!

Such a positive thing to have new hens for spring!
I`m sure they will have a lovely life with you.

I hope tomorrow`s visit gives you help with your ankle. So frustrating when you are not as mobile as you want to be.

At LAST I now have your blog on my sidebar. For some reason it has been a problem adding you, but I`m very pleased you are there at last!

If the new hen are young will they get lost in your fields ?
Or will the older hens pick on them ?

cheers, parsnip

Our big snowfall from last Sunday is still lingering in shady spots and now they are predicting more for this coming Sunday. But the daffodils are still growing as if none of this is happening. I should look to them for an example.

What sort of hens are they? I'm hoping to get some Speckled Sussex chicks later this spring. They are such pretty chickens.

I need some new hens. My current flock (Richard and Richard) are useless. One is looking rather purple and is probably on the way out, and the other lays my single daily egg. I would rather like 6 new black hens; they look so nice.

I bought a Pilates dvd when I was recovering from my broken back and neck and wanting to get a bit fitter without leaving the house. After five minutes, I was lying on the sofa thinking of calling an ambulance. Hard core exercise! I might try it again soon but I'm not sure.....

I am still pondering on Cro's two HENS called Richard and Richard. Am I missing something here?

Thanks for visiting.

I made the silly mistake of asking two small grandsons to name them. After they'd named the first one Richard, I asked about the second, and they just said Richard again.
