Done It!

I seem to subscribe to the maxim these days: "Never do today what you can put off 'til tomorrow" - alright, I have twisted it round to suit my own ends, but you know what I mean.

For days I have been unable to find things in my wardrobe and chest of drawers.   The cold weather has taken me by surprise and there are plenty of thin blouses but not enough jumpers easily accessible.

Today I got up determined to do something about it.   I have done it!   I am feeling suitably smug and satisfied.   All my Summer clothes are now in the spare wardrobe and all my Winter jumpers are either washed and on the washing line in the garden or freshly ironed to get out the storage creases and hanging in the wardrobe.
I have done a check on everything and collected all the stuff I have not worn for at least a year and put it together in bags to take to either the Charity Shop or the clothing bank in our little town.

Now my dilemma is how to persuade the farmer to do the same.  He says it needs doing - so here is a question for you:   Do I do it for him or do I let him do it himself? (i e leave it undone all through the winter I guess.)   Oh dear - Men - they do have their uses but cleaning out their clothing drawers and cupboards is not one of them.   Good job I love him!

I sort Jon's stuff out - he wears the same things anyway so its a case of when they drop to bits I buy a replacement - usually at a charity shop and show it to him - then he will wear that one constantly so meanwhile tat one is taken away!

Wait until he's getting dressed for bed .... then when he has his shirt ( or pants off) say 'Here try this on.. see if it fits' And that will get you started..... Thats what i do and i can usually get thru several before he says 'Pleeeaasse i'm going to bed!' LOL! Hugs! deb

If you can live with his winter and summer clothes together and he doesn't mind, let it ride. Or when you wash his summer items just put them away.

cheers, parsnip

Speaking as a mere man I'd say if you take some of his clothes away he probably won't even realize they have gone. And even if he does eventually, by that time it'll be too late for him to do anything about it anyway.

My husband's clothes are his responsibility, though I think he would look better dressed if they were mine. He's still wearing things he must have bought 30 years ago!

I quit trying to get my husband to go through his clothes. He would take it down and put it back saying he might wear it. He wears the same thing all the time until it gets thread bare. Saves me a lot of stress and he is happy.

Do it for him Pat otherwise it will only natter at you. I have sorted my jumpers out today and realised I need to buy a couple of new ones. Keep warm xx

I'd say if he doesn't mind and it makes life easier for both of you ... then do it for him lol

I have given up on trying to get new clothes for my husband - he does not EVER see the necessity! I have the opposite problem to you - I need to fish out more of my summer clothes, then put away the winter stuff I kept out till we returned from new Zealand - where we wore it all.

When my uncle went out his wife always laid out all his clothes for him. She ensured that colours matched up and that he was properly dressed for the occasion and the season. He was one of the smartest men I ever knew - in both senses of the word smart!

Don is the one who goes through the closets regularly - I have to protect some of my things now and then, when he gets too exuberant about cleaning out. Can't complain though, at least I don't have to do it.

If I don't take charge K will wear all kinds of scruffy togs. Just do it. You know it's the only way.

Good luck with that Pat - I can't get my partner to get rid of a holey t-shirt and his drawer is overflowing with them!

I leave Crafty Green Boyfriend to his own devices when it comes to clothes, though I do make sure he puts on an extra layer rather than switching on the heating as soon as he gets cold (which is what he'd do left to himself)

'Fraid I do it myself... bit of a control freak! Plus I know he finds it a tedious, boring, 'why?' kind of chore, and I like to make his life easier when I can, Lord knows he has enough to cope with thanks to me and my health issues.

I loved reading all the comments!
My friend Jill's husband does his own laundry something R. had not managed in our 40 years together.
I once offered to teach him how to iron a shirt.
He refused.
I offered to teach my son how to roast a chicken….
This is why women end up doing too much altogether though he has to do electrical stuff.
I think you had just better do the Farmer's clothes and get it over with.

My husband sorts his own clothes out and pretty well just adds another layer when it gets really cold, and gets out his arctic socks when we have snow. I am pretty similar actually - hardly ever wear a summery blouse but have some smart things "just in case". Just in case doesn't happen very often!

Now up to three base layers and a fleece as it's quite cold here now.

I agree with Elizabeth - very interesting comments. It reminded me of my previous husband who had a very holey cardigan in the most awful ginger colour. One day, when he was out, I pegged it on the line with a note on it, saying FREE TO GOOD HOME. He was indignant, took it down and put it back in the drawer.

I still remember a story from when I was a teenager in the days backyard incinerators allowed in Aussie backyards. Friend's mother decided to sort out her husbands clothes and put his old overalls in the lit incinerator only to find him jumping around frantically trying to fish them out with a stick!
My mother always bought my father's clothes, arranged them, and eventually ended up having to dress him completely - always in dull beige my whole life.
Daughter and I tried navy for a while until he said "I HATE navy, makes me look like a trumped-up lawyer!!" Don't think my Dad ever bought his own clothes - my husband insists on it.

I let mine go through his own.

What a sense of accomplishment though. A hated job, done. Gotta like that.
