THE VILLAGE

The nearest village to our farm is a typical English village. The houses are built of the
indigenous limestone which has been used and reused through the ages. When one cottage fell down the stone would be used to build another one. When an old workshop was demolished some years ago a carved stone head dating back to the Iron Age was found amongst the stones.

So lovely to visit the English countryside through your blog.
I have never been to Yorkshire unfortunately, though I grew up in Essex.

I find history so entrancing - especially architecture. Your village is fascinating. I enjoy visiting your blog and reading about a place and time so different than ours here where all is new, urban, and uninspiring. Thank you for sharing!

What a find that must have been! Is it in a museum somewhere now?

I'm looking forward to more of your hometown photos. They're beautiful, as well as the stories behind them.

Elizabeth - Essex - I have never been there but I do know it sticks out into the North sea and can have a similar cold climate to here - snow seems to hit Essex first.

Thank you Debra for your kind comments. The thing I enjoy about visiting US sites so much is that it is completely different from here.

Janice - the Iron Age head is in the possession of the family who
demolished the building. These relics are not all that uncommon - a lot of our history is lying about undiscovered in the fields.

Thanks scarlet for the comments. Keep visiting.

Have just visited your site and gone on a sentimental journey.
I stayed in Leyburn years ago (35 I think!) and your pictures brought back such happy memories. From what I can recall we stayed in the village pub, had a very nice evening meal and a super breakfast. I also remember we were the only guests so we did get special treatment.
Oh, and we bought some Wensleydale cheese, of course.
I will be back to browse through your archives !
Glad you enjoyed my French blogs.
