The vegetable garden, empty but for a few
turnips, beetroot and leeks, waits for the first
frosts of Winter.

Your mentioning grackles all over the place and making lots of noise reminded me of passenger pigeons who once blackened the sky for several days as the large flocks passed over and when they stopped to roost their weight broke oak tree limbs and their poo was so deep that it was often harvested from one place and hauled to another to fertilize whole fields. I learned all of this stuff when I was doing research for a book that I wrote, and have a blog underway about it now.

I've just found my way here from Helen's blog and have to say that your neat veg patch makes mine look distinctly uncared for.

Your puppy looks so gorgeous, love the photos of him.

Oh dear weaver, our vege plot also looks so unkempt compared to yours!! You must be a very neat person. Good to be back and see your blog again. I've just posted some of my birthday trip to Milan if you fancy dreaming about hot weather!!

I love all the photos - although I feel I need to get outside and sort my garden out now. :-)

Love the story, abe. Not sure what passenger pigeons are but we have getting on for ten thousand rooks who fly over our farm every morning and evening between their rookery and their feeding grounds. In Winter they are a splendid sight.

Thanks Debs - shall visit you when I have a minute. Pup is a gorgeous chewer - demolished her new lambswool-lined bed in three days!
The farmer does the veggie garden and is a fanatic for getting it tidy before winterm thankfully.

Thanks BT. The farmer does the veggie garden and it is always "up to date" - shall certainly look at your warm weather blog. This is the best time of year to visit the Mediterranean isn't it?

I know the feeling annie. You will see who does the garden from my other comments but I know that urge to do something - if I go to a very tidy house and then come back to mine I feel an urgent need to tidy up. I try to resist it!

Lovely pictures, Weaver, and a lovely way of writing about them, too.

Your garden looks soooo organised - totally puts mine to shame!

I drooled all over your TIDY veggie patch all ready for spring.
My garden is getting a bit beyond me now. The weeding awaits, there is no water at all for watering. I have n idea how anything will survive our long searingly hot summer.. feel a bit despondent even though I can still get good pictures of this and that.
No vegetables planted for this season, useless anyway.
