Sunday morning early

Well earlyish and I am really doing everything I can to put off getting dressed after my shower.   Sitting here at the computer in my dressing gown, the reason being that I sent for new trousers and sweater for winter and they need trying on urgently (they came on Friday).  Taking clothes on and off is such a chore at my age believe me.   For instance I love getting up in the mornings and I love going to bed at night but the process of getting dressed and undressed is hard work.

Did any of you watch The Last Night of the Proms?   I did.   I don;t usually because I watch music programmes for the music not for all the razzamataz and it spoils it for me  - hence last night's programme really pleased me.   Yes the orchestra was greatly reduced as were the singers but the music was beautiful.  'The Lark Ascending' was nothing short of sublime, the Mozart was wonderful and the soprano had an incredible voice.   It was good to see a new composition too - as the mother of a son who composes and has done all his life I feel it is very important to encourage new music whether we understand it or not.  Also we should be reminded that in 1913 people booed and walked out of the first performance of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' although my son reminds me that he - and many others - thinks what the audience were booing and walking out of was not the music but Nijinsky's choreography.

Lower down the country it may well be warming up and people might be walking the hills today in their shirt sleeves.   Here it is cloudy, chilly and blowing and 'almost' gale.   Have a nice day.

It's a cool, dull and windy day here. Autumn is creeping in. I hope to go out for a gentle walk after lunch. X

I did enjoy the scenic photographs from Scotland, Wales, NI and England that were shown during The Lark Ascending, and as you say it was sublime. I've heard Nicola B play it before and it is always so achingly wistful.

At the first performance of Eric Sati's piano recital the audience booed and walked off too, so the next night the curtain came up and Sati drove round and round the stage in a Citroen 2CV until everyone had left.

Sunny and 26 Celsius as we speak - but then of course I am far, far away from you and much further south on the globe.
I know what it is like when getting in and out of clothes is difficult. For many years, I had severe back problems which sometimes made it a chore to just try and pull on socks. Nowadays the only difficulty I sometimes encounter when dressing or undressing is a stuck zipper. Long may it remain that way.
You may have mentioned before that your son composes music. Anything we (should) know? I find this so interesting! Yes, all of what we now call classical music was new at some stage. Mozart, too, had not only admirers when he composed his operas! By some, they were considered vulgar at the time, especially when folks started to sing along.

I didn’t watch the proms but agree with what you say about new arrangements and music. It is sunny and warm down here is SW, back to summer temps in fact.

Librarian - in his days at University studying music (long ago now) he had some pieces played but since then he has had a couple of different careers but for the last twenty years has taught music (double bass, cello, pian and guitar) - he has now veered towards writing and has had a fair bit of poetry published.
Tom - I love that story - and I also love Sati's piano music.
North Riding - 'achingly wistful' describes it perfectly.

My Sunday started like that too. I have three new pairs of trousers that must be shortened. Either fashions are changing or my legs are getting shorter! There was a time when I never had to shorten trousers. Hope your new clothes fitted well.
We have been blessed with a lovely day today, after several wet and windy ones. Hope you get a fine day too.
I didn't watch the Proms as I quite enjoy the antics of the Promenaders, providing they don't get too much out of hand.

Dressing is a chore in winter. I got stuck in a dress one time. There's nothing a jolt of reality to spark up one's life, standing alone, arms crossed in the air, for an hour long second wonder how to wiggle out of it. Finding socks easy to get on and off is a challenge as well.
The wind is howling here in Vermont this morning. I refuse to not put on my sandals. There's so many straps, what's a chilly toe or two.

Sadly I missed it, but I dare say I shall find a recording somewhere. The Lark Ascending is my favourite piece of music.

Sorry that getting clothes on and off is such a PITA! I often get dressed in the dark in the middle of the night if I can't sleep and frequently get clothes on wrong way round or can't find a sock . . .

Reactions to the new version of Jerusalem were mixed. I think it’s important to allow new stuff and although I found it strange I’m keen to hear it again. I applaud new ways of thinking, doing and composing! We must keep an open mind or we miss so much.

I agree with what you say Anne - I didn;t find Jerusalem very inspiring in the new version but I would like to hear it sever al times before I passed an opinion as you say.

Heather sadly my clothes didn;t fit - they were just a tad too tight. All morning I deliberated on whether or not to return them and buy a size bigger - decided to keep them and lose a few pounds. By mid afternoon I had become realistic and have packed them to return tomorrow and ask for the next size up. I have actually only gained four pounds but every pound puts extra strain on my ankles and as arthritis is so bad in them it is necessary for me to lose it.

I missed the Proms, but Lady M watched it and approved. I must see if it's on YouTube.

It is interesting what you say about getting dressed. When my father-in-law was living with us, we had a terrible time getting him to change his clothes. It was literally a struggle. He'd been a miner all his life, and I think his hands hurt badly, as well as his shoulders, back, etc. He'd been injured many times in the mines, including a broken back. I was in my 30's when he lived here and knew little to nothing of miners then. I've learned a lot since then, and now I wish I had known then so I could have been more help to him. As I get older, I find my hands are not working very well, and hurt all the time. I can certainly empathize with him, and you, these days.
