Still hot.

Still hot here and really it is quite unusual for the Dales - we are not used to it!   I am not a lover of hot weather and find it impossible now that I am old - I don't seem to come to life until about five in the afternoon.   Then I have a couple of hours of activity.   Today I used them to water the parts of my garden that were really suffering.    And by golly did they say thank-you for it.

It is after eleven at night when I am writing this.   I find I am not sleeping well at the moment and wonder whether any of you can solve my problem for me.   Somewhere - it seems to be sounding from the false roof - there is a clicking - obviously a switch going on and off and it goes on throughout the day and night frequently.   My thermostat for my central heating (which is obviously not on at the moment) is turned down low.   And in any case the switch is in the hall and is very quiet.   I can only think it is the switch which controls the heat of the water - it is controlled by gas.   My gas boiler is in the garage (an integral part of the bungalow) and I don't think the sound is coming from there.   My hot water tank I think is in the false roof.

I am sorry to be so stupid but I have never had anything to do with gas before and I do find it a bit scary.   The clicking noise drives me mad and at present it seems much more frequent, going on throughout the night.   I really have no idea who to contact about it - I do have a contract with the gas board to look after things so perhaps I will ring them tomorrow.   They will no doubt think I am a silly woman - but I am where this noise is concerned - so no lie there then.

TheMay gardens are pretty all around the estate - but as a keen gardener all my life I always say that if you can't have a colourful garden in May then you are not a good gardener - it is without a doubt the easiest month for the flower gardener.

Before I started this post I looked out of the front door before locking it for the night - three cats prowling.   I do love the way the warm nights bring them out.   Do you remember that last year on warm nights I often had a big ginger tom who slept under the hedge in my garden?   I do so hope he comes again this year.

Until tomorrow.

Noises like yours drive me mad until I find out where they are coming from. I would phone them and explain. It will probably be something simple and not to worry about but until you are told that you will worry and we can all do without worry. x

I always have to find out where a sound is coming from. Call your Gas Board that is what they are there for.
Hope your Ginger Cat come back.
cheers, parsnip

If you can make a recording on your phone or computer, set the volume high, and post it on YouTube for others to hear it. It helped me years ago when there was a 24/7 knocking in the ceiling.
I hope you get the help to figure out how to fix whatever it is.

I would definitely ring and ask about it. Noises like that or any spook me out when I am alone at night. Hugs

You are not silly at all to be concerned about any noise you can't identify. The gas company will be very willing to come and check to eliminate that it is a gas switch problem. We had a mouse family living in our attic space and crawling in the walls. It drove me nuts all the tiny little scratching sounds. My husband put some well placed traps and that was the end of that. Good luck on solving the noise problem and get back to some nights of good sleep.

If it is the gas water heater, the gas is not always on; it is ignited by an electric switch. That may be what you are hearing.

I hate sounds you can't trace - it drives me batty! Do you have a smoke alarm or a carbon monoxide detector that might need a battery change? We have both and when the battery is low they emit a low but steady beep that I can barely hear. You are wise to have someone from the gas company check things out. Don't feel bad about it, a steady noise like that would bother anyone and probably needs to be checked. It would be good for you to have someone else listen to it and get their thoughts on where it seems to be coming from, etc. It's always good to compare opinions on what we hear. You've got me curious now, let us know when you find out!

Perhaps your son could tell you.

See Rachel's comment. Ask someone you know who can come and listen to the noise and identify it.

Unusual, and unidentifiable, noises are worrying. I have good hearing and can hear even tiny sounds. I always have to find the culprit. I understand your plight, but have no suggestions other than have been mentioned above. I hope you find it.

Biggest concern for me would be three cats prowling about in your garden at night, no doubt looking for wildlife to kill, or somewhere to pee and poo. Ridiculous that people are allowed to own an animal that is allowed to roam about in other people's gardens at night. The joy of putting your hand in cat's poo when gardening!

Our roof makes weird clicking sounds as it cools down in the evening. I wonder if it could be that you can hear, or perhaps plastic soffits if you have them?

Have you got a tap dripping that might make the switch for the temperature go on and off. But get it checked by the gas man they won't mind as its better checked than left

That sort of noise can be extremely annoying. I've not been sleeping well this week, but I put it down to the warmer weather as I always sleep best in a cold room - but under a nice thick duvet. I've just been reading the blog of someone who has a mountain lion visiting their garden at night!

One thing that puzzles me totally is that you usually say you can't hear a thing in bed!

I don't think I've ever lived in a house that didn't have the odd creak - seriously, particularly in hot weather things will expand and contract. If it's regular, then it could be something like the hot water pump thermostat clicking away, but if it is so loud that you can hear it in the night without your hearing aid, then it should be easy enough to identify. If everything is working, I wouldn't worry.

Do you have a power shower? We had an unidentified knocking in the roof space and eventually realized it was coming from the control box which needed looking at. Once one hears a noise it is hard to ignore - for me, anyway! Do let us know what it is!

Has the noise only started since the hot weather arrived? If so, it could be the sound of the plastic soffit or gutters as they expand/cool with the heat. Ours do that a lot. I hope you can get someone to investigate it for you.

Thanks to you all. I have always heard the noises since I moved into the bungalow and they are more frequent in the summer which does suggest the expansion/contraction idea.
As to why I can still hear them when I take my hearing aids out = you tell me. I can't hear the telephone if it rings. I think I am always waiting for these clicks and they are probably on a wavelength where my hearing is just not too bad. I am certainly less worried having consulted you all and as soon as we come out of lockdown my gas boiler is due for service - I shall ask the Gas engineer.

Derek - I love cats and welcome them to my garden. Never thought of the downside!! It is certainly preferable to having a mountain lion prowling.

Thanks for calling in.

I was wondering the same as Rachel, so thank you for explaining.
It is good to have this looked after; such sounds need to be investigated, and if the cause is harmless and can be dealt with easily, all the better.

Well now that you have enlightened us a little more that you have always heard the noises since you moved into the bungalow and they are more frequent in summer, and of course you mention them here on the night of your hottest day, I would say that the expansion and contraction is more than likely what it is. I am familiar with the same noise here.

Somebody else's cats are every gardener and wildlife lover's nightmare Pat. Even worse are the smug owners who know that whatever their cats get up to on somebody else's property that they are protected from harm. Would you be as happy to see several dogs roaming about in your garden and defecating on your lawns or would you report their owners.

We were driven mad at night by a gentle tapping, scraping and muttering. Delighted to discover it was a bee’s nest in under the eaves..

Pat why not have your son come over and listen for the click... perhaps with his better hearing he can identify it.. Sounds better than waiting for the lock down to end... Hugs! deb

Do check out Glycine on Google for help with your sleeping problems. I take about 3 grams each night with great results. This is an amino acid which our bodies produce naturally but in diminishing amounts as we age. I've tried melatonin on occasion, but it has always left me feeling groggy the next day and didn't always help that much with improving my sleep. Best to take Glycine in a powdered form in a capsule I have found.

Please call and get that clicking checked. Especially if it is connected to gas.

If there is a new noise, you need to get it checked.

And don't take any guff, for being "too worried" or any such!

Any sane person, knows that a clicking, needs checking.

Any sane person knows, that any new noise or such, needs checking.

And that is that!!!!!

It is not a new noise Wisp. Weave tells us that she has heard the noise ever since she first moved in which must be 3 years.

I re-read her post. I do not see where she says, she has heard this clicking, for 3 years. If that were so, why would it just be bothering her?
