A Hot Day at Last

Yes, at long last the hot weather has made it up here to North Yorkshire and it has been a day of pure unbroken hot sunshine.   Dare I say far too hot for me and I have been unable to do anything but sit quietly and rest.   But on the plus side I do know, and can pass on to you, the fact that my Iris, which I bought as Pink Lady, has been brought into flower today by the sun.   Pink Lady
she isn't but he is rather splendid (and no way from his size and majestic stance is he a she).

The rainbow that appeared on my door step the other morning has been definitely identified as the work of friend G, who painted it and put it on the step for me to find.   It is beautifully done and has given me a lot of pleasure.

In these rather trying times such small things can give  one a lift and I have needed it today because I have to admit that this very hot weather just does not agree with me at all.   I have found it very difficult to keep going today and think with hindsight I should have been like Rachel and 'gone to earth' more.   A good book and a quiet room is what is needed, and speaking of a good book I have another one to recommend, especially if you are a musician.   It is 'Grace Notes',another book by Bernard Maclaverty and was shortlisted for The Booker Prize in 1997, so    not a recent publication, but  readily availably on Amazon. I don't know when I have enjoyed a book more.

It is a beautiful evening, the heat has gone out of the sun,  the air is clear and it will later be a beautiful starry night.   Sleep well.

Well as you know, I love the heat but appreciate that you don't and you did the sensible thing. I was on the nature reserve by 6.30 this morning before it got too hot for my dog.
At lunch time I went for a cycle ride along the sea front close to my bungalow and it was good to see both the beach and the sea very busy. Good to see both adults and children getting good fresh air and sunshine again and even doing a lot of swimming. Even better was seeing most groups on the beach properly spaced apart. It's been a great day.

What a lovely rainbow gift. You have some wonderful friends.
The warm sunshine has eventually reached us here mid afternoon so we are now enjoying the garden for a few hours this evening. At least our temperatures are more manageable than down in the south of England. We are not used to too much heat!

By the way Pat, why not send a photo of Pink Lady to whoever supplied it and ask for a correct replacement.

I think perhaps you have grown a Confused Lady, as opposed to a Pink Lady. Still nice, but obviously not what you wanted. Glad you have some warmth. It is a nice warm day here, too. -Jenn

The beautiful rainbow is heart warming. The heat is lovely even when it slows us down. The iris is beautiful.

Warmer day here in Vermont as well. This morning I put my hand out to pull back the thermal draperies, stopped, and walked away. It stays cooler with things closed up. At night the air indoors heats up. The air conditioner isn't in, and may not be for a good while. I'm trying to see if I can do without it this year.

I love the rainbow! Small things do bring much joy especially when from a good friend. We have been having unseasonably cool weather for May here but that is fine with me. The older I get the more trouble I seem to have with the hot weather myself. Have a good evening Pat!

Today here was our first and last day of Spring (it's been very cold this month) and tomorrow will be summer with highs in the 20's. So I had all the windows open but tomorrow will start with my summer routine of opening windows at night to cool down then closing everything up during the day.

What a stunning iris, although as it is not what you thought it was can you ask for the correct one?

Yesterday I had my first swim of 2020. A bit cold, but very bracing.

Too long since I've visited you. But, always pure delight. My mother grew iris so easily. In texas, mine give out some green, but then no blooms. I loved seeing yours.

The iris is beautiful, no matter whether it is pink or not! Lovely surprise to find that painted rainbow on your doorstep, how nice of your friend.
It's been summery warm here for the past few days and will get up to 25 C today, and 28 tomorrow. As it is a bank holiday in this country (Ascension), I am not working but will go for a nice long walk/ramble with my sister, and then off to O.K.'s for the weekend tomorrow night after work.

Your iris was certainly worth waiting for, even if not pink it is absolutely gorgeous. I could never grow that variety as our soil was far too heavy for them.
We had a glorious day here too and I sat in the garden in the afternoon, with my daughter at a 2m distance, having a lovely chat and a cuddle with her dog.
The painted rainbow is delightful.

I can't take too much heat either and was mostly lurking indoors yesterday, working on the charity quilt. I have looked up some photos on line and could your iris be Edith Wolford? Looks very similar anyway. Hope you can get a proper Pink Lady sometime!

Glad you had a good book to keep you entertained. I have a PILE of them to enjoy.

Looks like Bovey Belle is right Pat, which means that you might have to change the sex of your iris.

Thank you for suggestions re the Iris. I bought it from Claire Austin as I do most of my plants. I could complain but the only trouble is that I think I ordered two and planted them side by side - this may well have been the other one. The clump has grown very well but no sign of a second one. There are few iris in this year's catalogue,

Cooler today. Thanks for calling.

Beautiful iris. Lovely rainbow. It is cool and breezy today. Heat is predicted over the weekend. Like you, I do not like the high heat. A few years ago I installed Fujitsu mini-split heat pumps. They heat and cool very efficiently. Not terribly expensive and rebates are provided for energy efficiency. See the mini-splits online.

Just curious - what's considered 'hot weather' in your part of the world. We're into the 90 deg F (I guess that would be 32 deg C) here and with our 90% humidity - it's hot!

Derek Faulkner said...

Anything above 25c is generally considered hot here. If we go above 30c for more than a day it becomes a heatwave and some people start panicking.

It is a beautiful iris Weave. I would take it as a bonus and other irises can always be added.
