Tuesday

We had a nasty rude awakening today when, after a sunny start, it suddenly clouded in and started heavy sleet showers.   Biting wind as I went into town to meet friends meant that I could wear my duvet overcoat for the first time this winter.   Warmer weather is forecast by the week end though so I shall have to put it away again.   When I went into the Bank (yes, we still have one bank left although for how long is hard to say) the lady behind the counter who comes from  'further up the Dale' said she had come into work through snow.   One of the things about living in The Pennines is that one can so easily be either just above or just below the snow line.   Makes life interesting in Winter.

Watching the Holocaust Memorial Service last evening - which I found so incredibly moving -  just emphasised again to me how very important it is that we do not forget these things. Each year there are fewer of us left who remember those times.   I was but a small child in the Second World War.   My brother fought in it and was at Dunkirk.   My parents must have been sick with worry but I never remember them showing it - I always remember feeling safe and secure.   If the air raid sirens went we all three (Mum, Dad and me) went into the cupboard under the stairs in our house.   It was cosy in there and we had a light and I used to quite enjoy it.   But what little worry and fear we had compared with those we saw and heard about in the service last evening.   We must never forget.

As you say Pat - we must never forget. As a child I was protected from knowing anything about the war and only began to learn of the horrors of it when I was in my teens.

I have watched much about the Holocaust death camps and the rounding up of Jews in the Ukraine and being marched to their deaths.

So many events, of "our time", which one wonders, if they will be forgotten, when we pass......?

Or worse, will they be Written-Out-of-History? Like many things are being, even now?

Or denied...? As is being done, right now.

It used to be said, that History is written by the victors. Now, it seems, History can be re-written, by those with a view point, or a grudge.

-sigh-

What a sad day of remembrance. No one should have lived through this'

This is a moving remembrance.I suppose all of us who knew of it will always be moved. I hope they never forget.

A totally disgraceful episode in World history. The Germans also slaughtered thousands of innocent civilians as they marched through the area where I live.... no regard for human life whatsoever. Have we learned from their appalling behaviour? No!

Taking up what Cro says, the figure of 6 million Jews killed is an understatement, there was also 11 million other peoples killed. Such gross cruelty was practised, that it is difficult to comprehend and quite frightening.

The War was all ancient history to me, having ended a full eight years before I was born. There had been a big POW camp nearby and my little friends had parents who spoke German, Polish or Italian at home. It was all very difficult to make sense of when you were sitting on the knee of a man who had served in the Nazi army who was now giving you a ride on his tractor.

My children have been brought up to remember ( They're 15 and 13 ), I was so proud of both of them as my son and his football team suggested to their coaches that they wear poppies on their kit on Remembrance Sunday ( the coaches had forgotten what the day was ) and my daughter was the flag bearer for Rangers at the War Memorial where we live. When my daughter and her History class went to Belgium for a school trip she was the one who said they needed to lay a wreath at the Menin Gate and she was the one that was nominated. Their great grandfather was killed in the First World War and we have found his grave and laid a poppy.. They will remember.
