Another jolly visit.

My two step great grand children called today with birthday cards and lovely bathroom 'smellies' - it is a while since I saw them and how they have grown.   They are delightful children and I thoroughly enjoyed the couple of hours they stayed.   They also brought me a box of chocolate brownies their Mum had made - I had a piece for my tea - goodness me it was pure chocolate and every mouthful was delicious.  I felt very self-indulgent.

The Church coffee morning was this morning but it was not all that well attended, no doubt due to the Rugby Final (the less said about that the better).   But every trip out is important when one lives alone and as the Village Hall is opposite the graveyard it did give me the opportunity to put a Remembrance Cross on my first husband's grave, as I do every early November.   I think it is very important that we always remember the sacrifices that so many millions made during that terrible time.

After a reasonably pleasant day here - sunshine on and off and very little wind - it began to deteriorate as the afternoon went on and by the time my visitors went it was raining.   I just hope it clears up quickly as they were all four off to the town bonfire in the nearby little town of Bedale - how much better to go to an organised bonfire and firework display than to have indiscriminate fireworks here and there causing so much fear for pets and danger to children.

I hope this awful weather doesn't spoil this bonfire Saturday evening. I agree organised firework displays are the way forward.

Oh sigh.... Sorry about the rainy weather coming. But your visit was lovely.

Yes, so much better to go to an organized fireworks display. Do not like home fireworks. Danger, and terrible for pets, as you say.

How nice to have an extended birthday party. We seem to have had our town's firework display this evening plus very loud pop music for most of the evening. I could hear it in spite of double glazing. So many people have complained about the loud fireworks but nothing seems to change. Beside pets, farm and wild animals being terrified, I always wonder how ex-servicemen suffering from PTSD cope. We had awful rain and galeforce gusts today but it didn't stop the fireworks. Maybe Nov 5th will be a quiet night. Do I sound like a grumpy old spoilsport?

The high winds and rain postponed our fireworks tonight Weave.

We seem to celebrate Halloween here, rather than All Saints.

Lots of men were out walking their dogs early on Saturday morning! I heard a few fireworks going off around here, though I think the organised show in the next village may have been postponed till Nov 5.

Another nice visit, that's lovely, and the chocolate brownies sound great! Isn't Bonfire Night on the 5th?

Derek Faulkner said...

In answer to Librarian, yes it is supposed to be Nov 5th but where I live in Kent the fireworks start going of mid October to mid Nov., with another large amount at New Year. So much money being shot up into the sky.

Bonfire night is 5th November but for convenience of organised events is usually moved to the nearest Saturday night. As Derek says fireworks start anytime from October and run over the given date by many days. Organised events started here in Norfolk in the mid 1980s. Prior to that we used to have a few sparklers, a Catherine Wheel and a some bangers in the garden after school and before bedtime on the 5th. It was very nice like that and no big bangs like bombs.

There was a few fireworks last night, luckily Lucy's deafness means she can't hear. Problem with fireworks is they have become more noisy. Our old tradition of hot soup, hot dogs with onions with our neighbour's bonfire party has been subverted to fireworks going off for days on end - but not here thank goodness.

One large fireworks display caused my brother's dog to run away and go missing for almost a week! Thankfully they were able to find her with some help from social media. That sounds like a nice visit you had. How old are they? -Jenn

Happy belated Birthday wishes. I live in the USA and absolutely love reading your blog posts. Makes one realize we all experience some of the same things (politics, weather woes, etc) but the issues themselves are somewhat different. Love hearing about Tess and would love to see her in her new, smart coat. Keep posting so I can keep enjoying!

I took Tess out for a walk in the rain in her new coat this afternoon but she was not keen to walk - I think I got either the coat or the harness on wrong somehow so shall have to discuss it with my dog walker tomorrow when she calls.

Thanks for calling everyone.
