Monday

After a day of sunshine, heat and threatening black clouds it has at last rained heavily for the last hour.   This means I do not have to water my courgettes today - it is a chore I would rather do without.

At lunchtime friend S called and took Tess for an extra walk - she was delighted (so was I).   It is so good to have rain regularly again - not so good if you are holidaying up here but for anyone farming or gardening then it is a great relief.

For the past four weeks I have been watching Ed Balls in 'Trumpland' and I must say that the programme has been very interesting and so has Ed Balls's presentation of it.   Each time I see him on television he goes up in my estimation.   If you are a UK reader of my blog and didn't see the programmes then I do recommend you look at them.

Our local church, St Matthew's, has a 'Soup and a Pud' day each Monday when you can go, have home made soup and a home made pudding and a cup of coffee - for a donation.   Most people seem to make the donation five pounds and the meal today was very good.   Soup choices of courgette soup and/or tomato soup and a pud of homemade trifle. In our little town there really is no need to be lonely providing one is reasonably mobile because there is always plenty to do.

Friend W and I are thinking of having a short holiday in the Lakes at the beginning of September and have begun searching for spa hotels where we can really relax for a couple of days.   If anyone has any suggestions then please do let us know.

The rain seems to have subsided so I shall close down this miscellany and, while there is a break in the weather, take madam for her evening walk.   Back tomorrow.

I have read your blog for a good long while, but have not commented before- I really admire the wise counsel you give, and enjoy hearing about your lunches out!
I have no experience of the Lake District, but hope you will have a wonderfully relaxing time

Perhaps I shall try and watch those Ed Balls programmes after all. I have to say he is fairly low in my esteem but perhaps he come across as brighter than I gave him credit for . . .

We have had a goodly amount of rain over the weekend (both our streams have returned) and it is a relief not to water round daily - we had gotten to the stage where there was only washing up water to water with unless we carried bath water down by the bucket.

That Soup and Pud day sounds a good idea, and a very good fund-raiser too. A great way to meet up with friends and make new ones.

I can't help you with suggesting hotels to stay at in Lakeland (we have only ever camped there!) but I applaud you on deciding to have a little break. I hope the weather is kind to you.

I felt sorry for the young policeman who said he had voted for Trump because the previous administration had not impressed him and he saw no reason not to give Trump a chance for 4 years. Balls immediately said the boy had been brainwashed into thinking it was ok to vote for Trump. I thought this was an unfair response. I haven't watched anymore. No rain here. Lovely hot day again. Balls' sense of judgement in the UK cabinet left a lot to be desired for the direction of the British economy.

Getting a bit fed up with regular rain showers and cooler temperatures now. Would like some hot and sunny weather again before the evenings get any darker and the six month autumn sets in. One farmer here wouldn't agree that he needs the rain, his two remaining fields of corn, still needing harvesting, are going blacker by the day due to the damp. The only time I've enjoyed watching Ed Balls was his comedy acts on Strictly.
If you'd of watched "Flying across Britain with Arthur Williams" on C4 last night you'd of seen him fly over the marshes of Sheppey and also land there.

If you Google "Daily Telegraph Spa Breaks Lake District" you will come up with the Telegraphs Top Ten this year. Reading them through they all have good things going for them depending on what sort of treatments/swimming pools/views/restaurants you want.

I always enjoy hearing about your day and Tess as well of course. It sounds exciting that you are planning a holiday! What an excellent idea!

Sounds like you had a good Monday. So glad you had some rain. Wish we had some rain, too! No rain in the forecast, here, in my part of southern California, although another area received some, according to the news, yesterday. The last rain we received in my area was back in May, and none is expected at least till October. That is how it is with our summers. Much cooler, today, with a high of only 90F (32C); forecast says we'll be back in the triple digits (37+C) by the weekend. As I said, it's summer!

Great idea to have a little spa break with your friend! I have never been to the Lake District myself but hear it is very beautiful.
Maybe next year no planting of courgettes or other vegetables that need frequent watering, seeing as it is a chore you'd rather do without?
We've had slight rain on and off all day yesterday, but it was not enough to really make a difference to the dried out fields, orchards and gardens. When O.K. and I were walking in the deer park on Sunday afternoon, we found the trees really looked the worse for it, leaves already turning brown when they should still be a good deep green.

Try for your small holiday, Paul often says we should go to the Lake District, Wastewater I think?
Trouble is I do not want to do Beatrix Potter's cottage, much prefer reading about her! Enjoyed Angela Carter and Sylvia Plath which must be in the same series, also Netflix - Queen of the Desert - Alexandra Bell, for once it wasn't all Lawrence gallivanting around....

Edit; or Gertrude Bell!

There was a good programme on the artist John Minton last night. Worth seeing if you missed it. BBC4.

Thanks Rachel, occasionally there is too much to watch, but I often turn to Iplayer for inspiration and BBC4 hits the mark occasionally.

We have had more lovely rain too. I share your relief at not having to water plants. I didn't watch the Ed Balls programme because of it's content, but might change my mind after your recommendation.
Enjoy your lunch out and your holiday in September. The weather is usually so perfect then.

Thanks everyone. Have now decided to leave it to later in the year for our spa break.

Do you use a watering can? I have a Hozelock Pico reel attached to my outdoor tap it is lightweight and ideal for small gardens and growbags and pots.

I agree with Rachel Phillips, Ed Balls didn’t listen to the policeman’s point; neither party had made his life better so he decided to vote for someone new. Whatever one’s view of his decision, it was his and his Alone and I didn’t see evidence of brainwashing. Enjoying your blog very much.

Greetings, Weave. I hesitated to comment on this post until today, having watched online clips of Ed Balls show online (I'm in CA). I agree with Rachael and Anne. One dear family friend of 30+ years is 100% Mexican-American and an outspoken Trump supporter, as is a gay couple who are also long-time family friends. All have advanced degrees. Many Trump supporters do. There are a number of black Trump supporters. What concerned me about the show is it implies a stereotypical view of who voted for Trump. I never liked him, but we had two very BAD choices in the last Presidential race... a race uglier than any my 85 yr. old mother ever witnessed in her lifetime. When the results stunned the world, what we used to call propaganda exploded and society (at least politically) has become toxic. Especially in CA. Shows like Ed Balls only fuel the social fires and while there's a tiny facet of truth there, it's by no means the whole picture. Which makes it and other shows like it dangerous. Just my humble opinion.

Even if voters do not vote as one would vote oneself I cannot bear to see arrogance and superiority heaped upon another person because they did not do as you would have done. I thought Ed Balls showed both arrogance and ignorance and his mind was made up before this programme started. The young cop was articulate and gave his reasoned response to the question of why he had voted for Trump. To say that the boy had been "brainwashed" was both unfounded and mind-boggling at the same time. From where Balls got that I do not know. I reached for the remote control and found something else to watch.
