Garden

It is slowly filling week by week.   There is still an awful lot of space but this week of exceptional warm weather has certainly brought it on apace.   I bought seven new conifers and three rock plants and two or three herbacious perennials and my gardener came yesterday morning and put them in for me.   Then he came back later with an acer shrub from his garden which he had rooted for me - every little helps and it is gradually taking shape
You will see that my main handrail is almost finished - you will also see from the steepness of the steps that I really do need it.
.In the hour since I first wrote today's post I have had to 'rescue' (using the glass and postcard method) eight honey bees from my kitchen and sitting room windows.   They seem to have a bit of a death wish today.

It's looking good Pat, and quite an achievement between you and the gardener. While waiting for the clumps to fill out you could always scatter some annual seeds between them - a few non-trailing nasturtian, night-scented stock, marigolds, etc.
Hot and sunny down here today, so nice!!

Looking good. Can you reach the handrail? Could be the angle the photo is but it looks quite far away!

I was thinking the same as Justjill. I am imagining you flying through the air like Peter Pan from the high bit to the low bit like a ballet. Is it an optical illusion or is the rail really a long way over from the steps?

The rail is quite a long way over Rachel and Jill, but it is the nearest the handyman
could get it. Actually my arms are long so I can quite easily reach it and feel quite safe using it. (not today though as the creosote is still wet!)

How exciting to see your garden now! I love it and the flowers and plants will quickly spread as they grow. Thanks for sharing a picture.

It's lovely to see a picture of the garden in the sunshine. The plants will soon establish themselves and start to spread. X

Can't wait to see it all filled in Pat. It's going to look beautiful.

Looking good Pat!!! It must be an optical illusion but from the angle of the photo the handrail looks too far away from the steps... Have you tried it yet?? Hugs!deb

Quite adept at rounding up honey bees, it sounds!

Very sorry to say this, but judging by your picture, the handrail looks unprofessionally made and positioned. Have a look at images of garden handrails on Google, and you'll see what I mean.
Still, I hope it works for you.

Quite a lot of honey bees, hope someone hadn't lost a swarm.

Garden looking good already

I am glad you have some (bumble? carder? red tailed bumble bee?) bees wanting to make a home in your wall. We have them here - especially the red-tailed ones (Bombus lapidarius I think they are). Not aggressive or anything, they just go about their business.

Your plantings are coming on well and will look lovely in the fullness of time. I imagine your garden is giving you great pleasure already. Enjoy the sun, as we have.

Your garden is already looking lovely and a few more showers will have everything filling out nicely. (Not a return to cold, wet and windy I hope) I think I would be glad of a handrail to cope with those steps too.
8 bees! Perhaps they were coming in to thank you for all the new planting.

DUTA - the handrail is indeed made by a professional. I did want it in wood rather tha any other material and it is not by any means finished yet.
However many plants I put in the garden seems to swallow them up and leave just as much space for more! The top 'layer is being filled with shrubs which should take up a bit more space.

Where are the rocks from the river bed and the wild heather? Is it all going in with the shrubs?

When I lived Kirkby Lonsdale I had a good gardener. He was a goat, well actually there were two. But I had a lot of grass, nettles, thistles, yu know the kind of things they like. One time one I caught of them with a bed sheet off the line.

I adore your back wall with all the beautiful stone work.
Your garden look new but by next year it will fill in so much more.
Just lovely.

cheers, parsnip

I have to say that I tend to agree with Justjill, Rachel and DUTA. OK the rail isn't finished yet but why didn't the guy put the base of the uprights alongside the slabs of the path so that you didn't have to be at arms length to reach it.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Looking at the photograph again it does give a false impression of how far it is from the path - I assure you it is fine.
Gwil - wrong soil for wild heather - and there are enough rocks in the garden thank you - too many really.
Thanks everyone

Don't you feel so loved when your readers fuss over you and the railing!! The concern and care that all have for you is really sweet actually!! Your garden will be so lovely!

I clicked on your picture to enlarge it, and can see that the rail couldn't have been closer or the handyman would have had to drill into the cement. As long as it's sturdy, it'll be such a wonderful aid in using the steps. It's all looking so lovely. It's hard to wait until it fills in, but then it's going to be a joy to behold. Thank God for the honeybees! I hope they made their way home.

Look at you! I could not envision your garden, and now I can. I think it's wonderful. That rail is exactly what my brother would have built. He did build one for me. Listen to me. I am overjoyed with the whole set up!

I'm sure that the handrail is suitable for you. I cannot imagine you accepting anything if it was not fit for purpose!
The garden is looking much more interesting now and I can just imagine you sitting on a bench enjoying the sunshine.
Have you bought a bench yet?
Judging by your photo you’ve had little rain yet.
We were thinking about you when we watched the Tour de Yorkshire sweep past your road.

If the weather continues like this those plants will soon expand to the available.

That is all looking lovely!! I've been rescuing a few bees recently too - could do with one of those long handled spider catchers.

A brand new garden always seems so full of possibility. I'm assuming those are all perennial flowers? It is good to take pictures now because in a year from now, so many of them will have expanded and filled up more space. I like using shrubs along with perennials. It gives instant height. -Jenn

Very nice Weave, I’m glad your getting the railing up. I have a steep set of steps to my townhouse and I’ve requested railings. I haven’t gotten them yet. Gabs
