Saturday!!!

Yesterday morning I managed to fall out of bed.   I got up and made myself a cup of tea, looked at the clock and realised it was very early so I decided to go back to bed for an hour.   As it was a bit chilly I got into bed with my dressing gown on.

I went fast asleep and overslept, waking up to realise that it was almost time to go to the monthly coffee morning.   Instead of climbing out of bed I 'gracefully' slid out and landed on the carpet at the side of the bed.   How to get up?   The skill of getting up when one is getting on in years does not disappear gradually - one day you can get up easily and think nothing of it - the next you can't
- or so it seems to me.

My only option was to crawl/shuffle through to the sitting room where I could use a chair for purchase.   Mission accomplished - the doorbell rang.   Friend W had arrived at the coffee morning and couldn't understand where I was.  Friend H, who lives next door to me, had come round to find out.

Well, it all adds to the excitement I suppose - and at least it proves what good, thoughtful friends I have - they are golden.

Hope that you did not incur any bruising Pat ?
I know what you say about not being nimble any more, I recall attempting to nip up on a small boulder a few years back and found out that I had lost my spring and that was a complete surprise to me.
Fortunately I have not fallen out of bed now for several years and when I did it was a full length body roll which brought laughter from a certain (un-named lady).

A good job you had a soft landing. Take care Pat.

Hope you are fine and not bruised.
I have my walker next to the bed but before I started using it I had a chair near by.
I am so happy to hear you have such good friends.

cheers, parsnip and mandibles

So pleased that you have good friends to care about you. I do hope you haven't added to the pain you have been trying to get rid of. I also need something to hang onto while I try to get up from the floor.

So very golden! I am sure you have good friends because you are a good friend....Could you put something next to your bed to try to prevent a fall/slip and/or something to help you get up if it happens....

That's how I get up every morning, Weave. I thought it was normal.

Thank goodness you were able to get up and thank goodness for good friends who miss you. Hope you got to the coffee morning in the end

Not enough purchase on the side of the bed I suppose.

I was provided with a mini bed rail by occupational therapy. Stops me falling out of bed and gives me purchase to rise gracefully. Worth a try. By the way the 'plate' was not, it is an original painting done in the round!

What a blessing it is to have friends nearby - and such good friends! Things work out for the best even though we may not be conscious of it when life changes are happening. I'm thinking you must be much relieved to be in town as hard as it was to leave the farm. Stay warm and safe. I've recently learned it's good to have something beside the bed to grab onto, as I had a spell of dizziness when getting up. These things seem to creep up on us oldsters, don't they!

Same problem here...cannot get up. I crawl to a chair or couch and push myself up. So happy you have those friends!

Three cheers for friends. I would be getting up exactly as you did, except I could use the bed rail.

It's a good thing you did have something you were expected to go to that morning. I'm glad your friends checked up on you. -Jenn

Oops! That could have ended much more seriously - whew!

I am only mid-sixties but I've discovered the getting down and crawling around on the floor making up train tracks is one thing, the GETTING UP again, quite another! I need a chair or door frame to help me up, and find I'm quite stiff if I've been too enthusiastic a construction worker for too long! The joys of arthritis.... However, the joys of little grandson are more tan compensation for the aches and pains.

I do hope the ribs are healing well Pat?

Glad your friends are so close to hand. Something to hand like a walker or chair would come in useful. I occasionally fall out of bed, normally because of a nightmare and the getting up is a problem because of my ankle.

It would scare me no end if I fell out of bed and would not be able to get up. Indeed, what a good job to have friends close by who will not just think "she forgot our coffee morning" but actually go and find out whether you're alright.
I hope your fall did not add to the pain you're already in with your inflamed nerve ends.

At your age and so it should Librarian.

I had my first "fallen and can't get up moment" recently. I tripped over the dogs and fell between the ottoman and chair. I thought this is the first fallen moment. I did finally get up.

Thanks for the understanding folks. Several (unnamed) people were rather rude but
then you would expect that from them wouldn't you (and I love them for it - they make my world go round!!)

I used to tell the ladies at my work - if I don't show up and haven't called to say why, come over to check on me! Scary, living alone...
So glad no physical damage was done! I'm sure we've all laughed at the awful "Help, I've fallen and I can't get get up!" commercial - but it becomes less funny every year!
