Sundays

Anyone who has experienced widowhood will tell you that Sundays are by far the worst days of the week.   Why?   Because everyone is with their family.   The shops are mainly closed and everyone is doing something.    On the whole, widows and widowers tend to be alone - doing the garden, sewing, watching television, reading - anything to pass the time without doing too much thinking until Monday morning comes around and another week begins.
Three friends and I have largely solved the problem.   We have taken to going out together for Sunday lunch.   The four of us have a more or less permanent booking at a local Restaurant which serves absolutely lovely food in very pleasant surroundings at a reasonable price.
Today friend W couldn't come although she did join us for coffee afterwards.   What did we all eat?  We all three had exactly the same - Salmon Florentine (with spinach - the other two don't have the spinach so the chef put the extra spinach on my plate as I love it) in Hollandaise sauce, with roast and mashed potatoes, roast parsnips, brocolli, carrots and cubed swede and for sweet just plain vanilla ice cream as we really couldn't face a large sweet.
Then it was into the bar for a pot of Lady Grey and an hour's chat so that we none of us arrived home until after four o'clock. And all for the cost of £15 each including a tip.  Pleasant food, good company and a Sunday to be enjoyed together.
We have now been going for so long that we find many of the diners eat there every Sunday so that there are plenty of people to chat to.

Your Sunday meal must have been delicious salmon prepared which ever way is my favourite food and I eat it about four times a week, every week - so you could say that I'm hooked :-)

My mum also says that Sunday is the worst day and as most of the residents in her apartments are local they often have their family calling. Usually my sister is around to take her out but it does mean my sister never gets a weekend break unless I go up to see mum. It would be nice if she had good friends like yours to go to lunch with.

Oh Weave You are demonstrating what many people fail to do, which is recognising a difficulty and doing something about it. I bet you are an interesting group of women.

Like I've said before when you were telling us about your Sunday lunch "club", it is like something out of a book - only better, because it is real!
And Salmon again? ;-) I love spinach, too, so I'd have competed with you about the other ladies' share of spinach. You could have had all my salmon, though!

When I became a widow, I did not mind Sundays more than any other day. But I was only 41 and still working, so I actually welcomed time to myself on weekends. And of course, if I wanted to, there were (and still are) friends to do something with; my sister being single also means she was/is often on her own on weekends. But I can see how the situation is different when you do not work; your solution is wonderful and I wish more people who feel lonely would create such opportunities in their lives instead of keeping to themselves out of fear of "bothering" others.

What a delightful and very sensible solution to this difficult situation. So pleased you have each other for comfort and have joined forces to overcome this problem.

An ideal solution, love spinach as well, so the meal sounds delicious.

Some people are addicted to tobacco, others to alcohol and others to illegal drugs like heroin but you Mrs Weaver are clearly addicted to salmon! Have you considered counselling or perhaps opt for cold turkey instead!
