Summer.

For the first time this year (and I hope not the only time) we have an absolutely perfect Summer's day.   The temperature is twenty-four degrees, there is a light wind and the sun is shining.   Every flowering plant seems to be covered in bees.

The farmer is busy helping with the silage, I am keeping in the cool, even Tess is keeping in the cool, and we have no intention of going to cast our referendum vote until later on this evening.

Yorkshire pudding has cast some doubt on the way the ballot paper is worded - can't say I think it will make much difference, but we shall never know I suppose.

Do you have days when you don't feel like doing a lot and so sit around reading a novel or knitting or something?  Or is it just me?  And am I the only one who gets intense guilt feelings about it?

Days like that still exist then Pat. Here in the part flooded South East today with more rain just starting, I'm beginning to wonder. It's been a very overcast and humid day with a 25 degrees temp but last night intense storms spoilt the day.
Normally it has to be 28-30 degrees before I start to think about it being too hot.

Very very wet here in Essex. I think it will continue through the night but good weather forecast tomorrow. Maybe things will dry out a little.

Without wishing to be impertinent, Weave, someone of your age should never feel guilty about doing nothing. Anyway, I still believe that it is impossible for anyone to waste time, no matter how young they are.

I confess to feeling guilty when I sit and read or sew, or knit as I did yesterday but then the weather was cold and awful and my arthritic joints don't let me do as much as they once did. I have done all my domestic chores and had a walk so not being a complete slug.

Weaver, I've found over the years that my daydreaming hours have often resulted in creative bursts...or at least some lovely dreams, when I actually drifted into a nap. I once felt rather driven to fill every minute, whether at my workplace, or during technically off duty hours. That was then. Time management was a skill, productivity was the aim.

Now I love having a bit of control over how my daily stew is stirred.

I love knitting, because it allows me to play with colors, and reading, because it exercises my mind. Right now the two books I mentioned on my recent post could not be more different, and yet each one of them teaches me something I might not otherwise have known.

As I type this, I'm just finishing tonight's supper, cooked "from scratch." I am learning via a BBC London internet feed what the results of the UK referendum might be. This interests me on so many levels, including how it might affect some investment decisions...and travel plans.

May I confess that I never mind postponing vacuuming the apartment, no matter what the season.

Best wishes. xo

I had a relaxing day here, in retirement we can choose to do that. Temperature here is ideal, anything in the 70s is ideal for me. I imagine that is what your day temperature was too. Once in a while I go online and convert temps from C to F. I hope the referendum turns out to have excellent results.

We have been in the upper 90's with the last 3 days being 103 to 105 degrees....I'm doing any errands and outdoor chores very early in the mornings...the extreme heat at an older age I am fearful of heat stroke.

Over here there's a lot of swimming, and a lot of sitting in the shade with cooling drinks. It's what Summer is all about. I've also been watching my neighbour baling his final lot of hay.

I have such "doing nothing" days frequently, but mostly when the weather is cold and wet and does not appeal for being out and about. Wednesday and Thursday were perfect summer days here in south Germany, too, but somewhat warmer at 30 Celsius. It is supposed to be another perfect summer's day today, but I'll be spending it mostly on trains and inside a conference hall. And rain/thunderstorms and much cooler temperatures are forecast for the weekend...Oh well.
I've not yet checked any of the news pages to find out about the referendum's outcome...

It's 52% to 48%. Ballot paper wording was crystal clear. No problem with it.

It is another gorgeous day in Yorkshire again, anyone who has the chance should be out taking the air, feeling guilty should not be thought about! the votes are in, decision decided and now for the interminable picking over bones by the media, put some music on as well and shut out the noise....

Dear Weaver!!
Oh no, you are not the only one who wants to be buisy doing nothing in particular and then feeling guilty. I think its very feminine. Hopefully the pollingstations where filled to the brim, I haven't dared turn on the set yet to hear of the outcome.
Today is Mid-Summereve in Sweden, all night there has been thunder and lightening and right now it's raining. But we've had some really lovely and sunny days here too!! Enjoy life, it is a gift!! And encourage the Farmer, we need him and his kin. Here the farmers work around the clock it seems, getting us fresh strawberries, potatoes, onions and broccoli, tomatoes and...I'll pop out in a while to pick up fresh strawberries at Lennarts place, oldest daughter baking strawberrycake this morning!!

With advancing years, life is here to enjoy as we please, not to feel guilty about !

That bloomin work ethic. I still can't give myself permission to spend an afternoon having me time, unless its a really sunny day when it seems OK to be outside reading now I don't have a garden to tend. Anyway you certainly have my permission to take it easy, any time you want.

I felt like that yesterday Pat, largely because it was overcast, airless and humid here. All I did was go out to vote and pop in to Tesco for a few odds and ends where it was deliciously cool. I always think over what I have done or achieved at the end of the day and yesterday it wasn't very much. I hope we get some summer soon and not just the odd day. I am greedy.

I admit I have a very difficult time doing nothing. Even if I am sitting to watch a programme on tv, I am getting up during commercials to throw in a load of laundry, or unload the dishwasher, or something else. I am hoping that once I get into retirement, I will allow myself some "down time". -Jenn

Thanks everyone. After reading these comments I must say that I feel slightly less guilty about doing nothing much.

After sitting around doing nothing really constructive - is maintaining a blog constructive? - as I heal from my surgery, I've tried NOT to feel guilty. It's hard not bending, lifting, doing the usual household chores, or going out to pull a few weeds, drag the heavy hose about the garden etc., but I must adhere to the doc's rules and just be patient!

Sitting here reading great books and spending some time on the laptop isn't so bad knowing one can't do much else. As it's very hot I've enjoyed doing these things in the gazebo and not feeling pressed to do much else for a change.

I never feel like sitting around knitting as I don't know how to knit. It is important to relax but even so I am very aware of how precious one's time upon this earth is and there's always something else we could or should be doing.
