Weather.

The weather today, as yesterday, is absolutely diabolical.   As I look out of the hall window it is pouring with rain, I have a woolly jumper and a cardigan on and am still quite cold and there is no sign of an improvement.

In addition my finger is still giving me some pain.   I can see that the antibiotics are working; already the swelling is going down and the inflammation is much less - but sadly the indigestion caused by the antibiotics (to be taken only on an empty stomach) is so awful that I am virtually unable to eat much.

But I did manage a most exquisite lunch.  The first tiny, little finger nail sized, broad beans were ready in the garden and so we had
roast salmon, courgettes, broad beans and potatoes with parsley (this season's crop from the garden) sauce and it was to die for.   Any minute now I am supposed to take another antibiotic and I am not at all sure I can face it.   As Heron said yesterday - try live yoghourt instead (I have some in the fridge).  I know you are told to finish any course of antibiotics you start, but really the indigestion is making life very difficult.   The farmer reminded me that the last time I took antibiotics was on holiday in Canada once (maybe ten years ago) when they were prescribed but made me feel worse than the infection.   In fact I didn't take them and when the farmer caught the bug several days later, he took them - all very unorthodox.

Well the rain continues to pour down, the farmer is digging a drainage channel across the pasture with his new digger which has a good, waterproof cab on it (and a radio), so he is dry and happy no doubt listening to local radio.

Our telephone is back on after two days without a land line (well done BT for prompt action)  and at least we live up here and are in our own home rather than up here on holiday, which would be awful (spending all day playing  games in a rented cottage costing the earth is not my idea of fun).

Pat, you might try using one drop of T Tree Oil on your finger or even 1 drop of Lavender oil it might sting a bit. Both are great for killing infection.

What a terrible spot for an infection. Tell the doctor next time you want an antibiotic shot. They last for 2 weeks and it should solve the problem. It is 100 degrees here every darn day and we still have a month of it left. It is miserable.

Pat, I should contact your surgery and explain about the indigestion and they may be able to change the antibiotic prescribed. My mum suffered the same problem and it made her feel very ill indeed - we didn't realize at the time that it was the tabs but once they'd finished the indigestion went. I think that it is listed as 'an uncommon side effect affecting approx 1 in 100'! You could also try putting plenty of antiseptic cream on your finger, this used to work wonders when I helped with mucking out at a stables and was prone to infected fingers- very painful they were too.

Another voice suggesting that you ring your surgery ASAP and explain what the prescribed Rx is having on you. This should not be a case of grin and bear it.

I am one of those people who have a very bad reaction to quite a few prescribed Rx and one time the doctor did end up giving me a injection rather than the prescribed tabs and that worked very well. I hope you get this resolved quickly and heal and feel better.

Your lunch (dinner) meal sounded lovely. So sorry about your dreadful weather.

Take care.

Your present weather reminds me of an end July / beginning of August many years ago I spent with 40 11yr olds at Staithes and trudging over the Yorkshire Moors. Fortunately I've also had brilliant times in that area.

Well I'm with Heron on this, not sure about the yoghurt but it does get rid of bacteria/s internally and should work. The thing is not to use too many remedies on one spot. Hope the finger gets better anyway.

Sunny and warm here this afternoon at last! I swear by honey for cuts and infections (putting it on the cut, under a bandage or plaster). But I would also ring your surgery and explain the reaction and see if they can change the type of ABs or the amount. There are different types available so they should be able to. Hope you feel better soon.

Wouldn't your Doctor prescribe a different antibiotic which wouldn't affect you so badly? At least your finger is improving. I was very cold all day yesterday here too, today is better and at least no rain. It still doesn't seem like July! We lived near Stockport when our children were small and had most of our summer holidays on the north Welsh coast. I can still remember the relaxing time I had washing nappies in a caravan sink and trying to get them dry and aired while the rain poured down outside!!

Surely there must be a better solution than a medicine that makes you sick. If there is a side affect from any medication it is always listed on my "allergic to" list and never used again.Modern science has many solutions and you should not be sicker from a medication than without it.

The Guardian is posting miserable holiday snapshots here

I'm so very sorry for people who have limited holidays and do not like going to the cinema a lot or playing board games!
Hope the antibiotic thing resolves itself.
Sounds awful.

I remember a miserable family holiday in a cottage in WAles, and the weather wasn't even bad. The other family with us, however, were.

I had a similar reaction to antibiotics but the doctor didn't want to change them. The practice nurse suggested taking a yeast supplement (Brewer's Yeast) to settle my stomach and it really helped. The yogurt suggestion is probably working from the same principal, of helping your stomach cope with the medication. Hope you feel better soon.

Well, I certainly do hope that by the time I am typing this comment, you have used your restored BT connection to check with your doctor about those wretched anti-biotic side effects. Even though the general word is to finish the course as prescribed, surely every patient is not identical to all others.

Chilly UK summer reminds me of my only summer visit to London...way back when, taking advantage of those good old inexpensive stand-by tickets. I've otherwise always traveled off season, late autumn, winter, or early spring and marveled at the mild weather. Even amused my NYC friends on my return by revealing, "I never used my umbrella."

Well, that August was really cold. During my London week I think I wore all the clothes I'd brought with me...at once. I remember getting a very trendy Vidal Sassoon stylist give me a startling (but actually quite wonderful) haircut, and his remaking that he realled liked all the "gear" I was wearing.

Hoping things warm up soon in Yorkshire, and your finger heals by week's end.

Goodness! I hope your finger (and subsequent reaction to the antibiotics) feels much better soon.
The weather sounds dreadful. Here's hoping that improves, too.
But, your meal...that meal sounds wonderful!

We had some cloud yesterday, and about 10 drops of rain. We could really use a day's proper rain; we haven't had any for months. I have no advice about painful fingers, but I do think that Heron's Druidical cures sound a bit dodgy.

thanks for all your advice. The weather is a little better today - some sunshine and some heavy cloud. Over the past two days we have had well over two inches of rain and sadly it has ruined all the rambling and climbing roses, which are looking very sad - I doubt they will recover this year. On the bright side - I watched a blue tit taking a very pretty drink this morning from inside a rose.

You have my sympathy about the a-b's. I had one lot that were like that and they made life seem hardly worth living! Fingers crossed you are better soon. Sorry, pun not intended . . .

My husband has trouble taking antibiotics and the doctor tells him to take them as long as he can and not worry about finishing them. We often share medications, probably shouldn't, but we do.
