The Seasons.

According to the weather forecast today, snow is set to hit this country in the form of very heavy showers, accompanied by winds straight down from the Arctic, by Thursday morning.   It will affect only the North of the UK and the South is set to be positively balmy I believe.

I am one of those folk who, once the first snow goes (last week here)  I expect that is the end of Winter and we won't get any more.   The farmer, on the other hand, reminds me that one of the very worst Winters we ever had in his life time didn't begin (in terms of snow) until the first week in February.

But all warnings of snow pale beside the warning today on the news for the East coast of America - three to four feet of snow forecast in New York.   If you are reading this Elizabeth - get in stocks of food and candles, a good supply of reading - and wrap up warm.

On another page of The Times I read that it is going to be an early Spring this year!    Can't win can we?

When we have been seriously snowed in here in Norfolk it has almost always been in February.

I mostly remember the winter of 1947. Then I do remember getting snow flurries on Flamborough Head in June on the day of the coronation.

Last year it snowed from October through March. Recently we had over a foot late in April. It's beyond all ken, as the Scots might say.

Two years ago it was still snowing when we went on holiday in April. It cleared during the week - but it wasn't great!

I thought of Elizabeth too ! But I am sure she is an old hand at this by now.
You, the Farmer Tess and all the farm critters nestle down and stay warm.

cheers, parsnip

I used to love winter, skating and skiing. Now ? - oh what I wouldn't give for a glimpse of the sun. We are in the midst of a great huge cloud, inverted over us while we shuffle around in the snow and exclaim and whinge about how gloomy it is. Every day that passes is a day closer to spring, I keep telling myself. In Alberta my cousin tells me it is 18+ degrees C, no clouds, continual sunshine!!!!

My husband reminded me of that winter too.

I am on the east coast of the US..they are already downgrading the snow where I live. It is usually a lot of hype to get viewers! We have 2 wood burners as well as a house electric generator....food in, etc. barn full of hay and feed! All set! What do people expect...this IS winter!

Not so balmy down south as far as the latest forecast is concerned. Wintry showers for Thursday and Friday. February is usually the worst month - at least it's short!

I remember one year it snowed here on Easter Day.

I've just been out again with the snow shovel to keep open my path to the gate to the lane which is now totally iced over and perilous to walk on. Best thing I find is to walk at the very edge where the snow tends to drift so at least I can get a soft landing in the event of a tumble.

Hello,

We have no idea why we have not ventured 'Up North' before now to your delightful blog, having seen you so many times on Tom's blog, but here we are.

Unusually for Budapest, there is no snow and none in immediate prospect but it is certainly freezing cold. We have been here in winters of -20C but it is always the case here, unlike England, that no matter where one goes.....church, cafe, museum, concert hall.....it will be boiling hot once inside!

We can imagine that life on the farm does become more difficult in bad weather and, as in our gardening days, one is for ever looking at the forecast to determine one's plan of campaign. Whatever, we hope that Spring will be soon arriving and spirits lifted to match!

Perhaps we'll get our early Spring the minute the snow thaws at the end of February!!

We're due 'heavy snow showers' overnight on Wednesday and into Thursday. I'm not taking it very seriously but I may come unstuck when I realise I don't have enough bread and milk in the freezer!

I always think February is the worst month for snow, but also remember a couple of snowy Easters recently

February is our worst month usually. We are supposed to have rain tomorrow evening turning to snow tomorrow night. Only time will tell.
