All Communication Lost.

Folk of my age - in fact anyone who is retired - should make themselves computer literate.   I have so many friends who say they just can't be bothered and what on earth would they use it for.

I say here and now that I have been without Broadband for most of the day today.   Don't ask me why - I pressed various buttons and got various questions on the screen, most of which I couldn't answer.   Finally, in desperation, I switched off and managed without all day.   All I can say is that I felt bereft without the communication I get from blogging.   Virtual friends become an important part of life, particularly on days like today when the weather is freezing and there are frequent snow showers.  And I had no idea who had e mailed me because I couldn't access my e mails.

Now Broadband is working again - so hello everyone.  I'm back chatting to all and sundry.

The internet is the replacement for the telephone in the cold hall. I missed your "call" yesterday/this morning.

OH i KNOW what you mean. Even virtual friends are friends indeed! And i KNOW i would miss hearing your words if you were gone very long...So glad you are up and running again.. We are not particularly cold but we have been fogged in and chilly for over a week now. They keep promising us temps in the 60's but we are lucky to break 50... Over the weekend hubs and i got out for some hiking and we managed to get above the fog and have some sun on our face. It sure made for some gorgeous photos that really do not do the beauty justice..... Will post about it soon... Hugs! deb

Maybe it was part of the cyberwar games. There's a big place not far from you. There are three here. If you get the chance you might go and see the cinema documentary Citizen Four.

I'd be bereft without my broadband. I really don't know what I did before the internet!

Hi, Pat!
Yes, being without internet is awfully dull and frustrating.
Maybe one gets more reading/cleaning/cooking done...?
So glad you are back in cyber world!

Not to worry, Pat. We'll never let you go.

Thank goodness you are back again. I feel deprived when there isn't a post from you, and then feel guilty and concerned in case you are ill!
It has been very cold here today but bright clear skies throughout. I'm sure we will get something not so nice before long.
I was gently bullied into using a computer by our daughters, and am so glad they persevered. Apart from the times when it makes me gnash my teeth I get a great deal of pleasure from it.

At the moment, the connection - or at least mine - breaks down about 5 times a session and I have to trick it back into life by doing other stuff, but maybe your situation is a bit more tricky - I'm thinking of those advertising voices (which are not here now!).

Going back to your egrets of yesterday. You will probably see some around Suffolk and Norfolk wetlands. They have spread across the counties in the last 5 -10 years. Col worked on Bridge inspections before he packed up work and would often see them on rivers and water meadows.
Funny how we all managed without the internet just a few years ago!

I agree totally, I wish my Mum would join the internet world but she reckons 1. She's too old (rubbish) and 2. She'll waste too much time on the web (what's wrong with that ? :)

Hello again. We missed you.

Sometimes the connection does disappear for mysterious reasons.

The signal leaves me, too. I don't like it because I must turn off the computer, unplug the broad band, turn on the computer, plug the broadband back in. Once I had the instructions written down, but not I have the order memorized.

The number 1 Quick Fix for digital problems - switch it off, walk away. Come back and switch it on. Usually works (but not always).

Glad to know that you are reconnected.

I completely agree with you about the varied benefits of having internet communication. And definitely do wonder about folks who don't seem to get it.

Sometimes powering down your modem for a minute can reboot it. Of course, providers do go offline from time to time I suppose.... Glad you're back

I'm pretty useless at diagnosing what's wrong with my computer but I do know that turning the whole thing off and having a coffee often fixes it! Glad you're back connected Pat.

I feel your pain Weaver. My reading list has disappeared for over a week now and I so miss reading other's blogs. Some of my followers have said they can't find my blog either. I have tried everything and nothing has worked. Not even the blogger help forum.

I love the snow scene in your header. A Yorkshire girl (from Holmfirth), I really miss the snow. Now living in Perth, Western Australia, where today's forecast is 35 degrees - too hot to go out except for a swim!

It's addictive. Mine was down for a while recently and I found myself panicking (although I didn't admit as much to my wife).

glad to see you back, I've been on the computer for about 20 years (can measure against my son's age). His advice when I got into trouble, was don't panic, put your finger on the 'off' button and hold for 20 seconds. Now we have little blue lights on our routers to indicate problems....

I work in a bookstore and we sell tablets for reading and browsing the internet. I find that lots of older folks are intimidated by the thought of learning to use the internet, and will make some of the excuses you mentioned. I think they're secretly afraid of looking foolish in front of tech savvy youngsters. Well, I'm almost 40 and I have a great deal of patience....so I usually am the one that gets called upon to help customers with no internet experience learn to use tablets. If you put them at ease and let them know that there's nothing shameful about not knowing how to use a computer, they usually end up LOVING all the worlds the internet can open up for them.

I tell them all the time,"NO ONE is BORN knowing how to do this stuff!!" Or I'll joke around and say,"If you have any problems later, just grab the first 10 year old you see and they'll sort it right out!" :)

I wondered where you were! I agree that life with the Internet is a wonderful thing. Fortunately, we don't often have outages where I live and when we do it's usually a matter of resetting the router and we are 'live' again. I have found though that when all else fails, I use the data connection on my phone -- and I've even figured out how to make my phone a 'hotspot' for my tablet and, in a pinch, my computer... (Simples!);-)

I always follow our teckki man's advise before calling him. That is to turn the power off for a minute or two and then turn back on. That usually fixes things. I also would like to understand the computer more than I do. This computer is my gateway to the world! It's my travel until I can travel by plane again!

I so agree!! I'm lost when our broadband goes down. I can live without my phone---it lives in my purse anyway, the tv and I've even said my car, but I have to go online.
