Ashamed to show his face.

Alas, my Buff Orpington cockerel is moulting and a sorry sight he looks too.   He seems ashamed to show his face and spends almost all day inside the hen hut, refusing to come out and shepherd his 'girls' about as he usually does.

I managed to coax him out this afternoon when I took some scraps down for the hens and called them.   He couldn't resist popping out to see what was on offer but he looked so sad.

I really wanted to tell him that in a couple of weeks, when he gets his new feathers, he will be a more magnificent sight than ever.   He always seems a very proud chap who seems to sense just how beautiful he is.  Alas not now.   If you really want to make him feel ashamed of his looks, blow the picture up larger to see just how bad it is.

Since I know nothing about chickens,
I see some white spaces and I assume he has a longer tail but He still looks rater good to me.

Good to see your chicken in your post today.

cheers, parsnip

Pat
My cockerel Badger is doing exactly the same thing
He actually looks a little depressed but I have put that down to the presence of a new rival
Oh the joys of hen ownership

Poor old Buff - he does look a bit girly without his splendid tail. You must cheer him up by taking another photo when his feathers have grown again.

He looks quite fine to me, Weave - a lot better than my... oh no, I mustn't make another tasteless joke at Buff's expense.

Ah the delicate male ego.
The roosters do have character. The rooster we had once, was a true gentleman and very dapper. The rooster next door was argumentative, aggressive and self-centered, and definitely was a strutter. Our gentleman 'paced' and posed beautifully. Don't remember either of them moulting though.

A cardinal who frequents the feeders is molting right now. I think his adult feathers are replacing baby feathers, perhaps. Every day he looks better; he was so pathetic a few days ago. Hungry, but pathetic.

One of our guys is at that stage too and a bit down and out about it.

I can tell from the photo that he still has a bit of a swagger!
