Village Life

We live about a mile out of the village and consequently I rarely see any of the villagers apart from the few friends I meet regularly. So it is lucky that during the Winter months there is a coffee morning on the first Saturday of each month in our Village Hall.

It is a lovely occasion. Organisation is off to a fine art. The tables look attractive with cloths and flasks of freshly made coffee on them. A plate of biscuits stands in the middle of each table and by a quarter past ten the place is buzzing.

There is a charge of £1 to go in, there is a raffle, a cake stall, a book stall and a 'bring and buy' stall and card stall, but there is no obligation to buy anything. It is just a meeting place for villagers and we all enjoy it as such.

This morning an elderly man in the village had picked some roses from his garden, surrounded each rose with sprigs of lavender and tied them into bunches. As we sat drinking our coffee he came round with the bunches in a basket and gave one to each lady present. Wasn't that a lovely gesture. You see, the age of romance is not dead in our village at least.

I took the photograph just as I was leaving but I am sure you get the general idea.

Oh Pat - that sounds like a lovely event and I'm sure everyone looks forward to it immensely. What a sweet gesture by the gentleman with the little posies. The nearest we get to that is a Pensioners' Drop-In for tea or coffee, but it is far more ordinary and every day, but I am sure it is appreciated by those who live alone.

What joy there is to be had in life if we only make a little effort. It would be so easy for all your neighbours to sit at home and feel miserable.

Romance dies easily in this world, Pat, but not in villages like yours, where there are people like you making valiant efforts to keep it alive.

In small communities where there are not so many social activities on tap, an event like this is especially appreciated. There are few things to beat gathering together with friends for a coffee and a good natter! How lovely of the gentleman with the roses!

I miss the coffee mornings at our church. They were a lot like what you've shown. Such a lovely gesture from the gentleman with the roses.
