Sixty six years ago today...........

Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima and changed the world for ever.
Sadly we seemed to have learned very little from the experience as Chernobyl and now Fukushima continue to pollute the atmosphere - all in the name of 'progress'. I read in today's Times of an old dairy farmer in Japan, Minoru Oka who was a young conscript in the Japanese army when the first bomb fell - and survived. Now he has been driven off his dairy farm by this nuclear leak. He says - first an explosion, now a steady release - but fundamentally it is the same thing.

On a much lighter note (and we have to lighten up, don't we, otherwise everything would be just too awful to contemplate) don't you just love the photograph above. It's a dog's life, isn't it.

Have a good weekend. We are going out for the day tomorrow so I hope the weather improves - we have had an all day thunderstorm today and torrential rain - almost an inch since breakfast time.

It would seem that 'the powers that be' grossly underestimated the implications of the first atomic bomb. As a species we seem hell bent on self destruction one way or another. Maybe my grandparents felt that way too, and I am just another old person focusing on the awful things in life and not seeing the fun. I'd like to think so.
Your photo of Tess is delightful - dogs know how to relax don't they? Have a lovely day tomorrow.

Love the Tess photo.... She looks so cute with her summer hair cut.
Dogs truly know how to relax.
I'll be working at my desks and I will look down and there is Hamish on his back cooling off and exposing all sorts of body parts you really don't want to see.
Little girl dogs have such cute tums plus you can rub their tummies !

cheers, parsnip

Thanks for that reminder, Weaver. I wouldn't have known it otherwise. All that research in Los Alamos...

Tess is a treat!
A sad anniversary, indeed, especially in light of the recent horror in Japan. The latest findings are of very high radiation levels on our Island from the Japanese nuclear disaster.

I wish you sunshine for tomorrow, then! ♥

Sad to say we have learnt nothing, for since Hiroshima there have been more than 2,000 nuclear explosions on the planet - politicians and military people and the world's press merely call them nuclear tests - and many of these are hundreds of times bigger than Hiroshima. Many years ago one Bikini Atoll test vaporised 3 islands. The area is still uninhabitable.

The radiation coming out of Fukushima is like "Chernobyl on steroids" and is continuing with no end in sight. The world's mainstream media should be brought to book for failing to warn the planet's children.

We seem incapable of looking squarely at the mess we're creating and taking any steps to change things, it does seem impossible sometimes.

Lovely cute photo of Tess and I hope you had a nice day out. We were out all day at an outdoor event and it rained constantly the whole time, we still enjoyed ourselves though...

We could use some of your rain- haven't had a drop since just a light sprinkle in early May, and probably won't have anything until October... A thunderstorm sounds divine!

Thank you very much for this thoughtful post. Over here in the States, there is very little updating news from Japan. It is as though the media does not wish the population to be reminded of the dark side of nuclear power.

Your frolicking pup and the colors of the photo have reminded me of the artist Bonnard who loved slipping pups into the patterns of his paintings.

Best wishes.

Jesus, Pat, I thought Tess had been nuked for a moment. Glad to hear that's a normal canine postion.
