Wimbledon weather.

There seems to be a tradition here in the UK that when the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament is on the weather is variable - usually sunshine and torrential rain in turn. This year is no exception but at least that very expensive roof can come over Centre Court and keep some of the matches going.

Yesterday we went to our feed merchant to stock up on food for our various animals. As we arrived in the yard, so did a cloudburst so I am posting two photographs of typical June weather.

The chicks are a week old today and we have let them out into the run for the first time, although mother soon took them back in again. She is most agressive. You nearly need a suit of armour on when you put their food into the chicken hut - she comes flying at you like a bullet and you have to shut the door quickly to avoid being pecked to death. She is certainly looking after them well and they have almost doubled in size.

I can't remember a June so wet for a long time. We've got flooded fields here, which I've never seen at this time of year before.
That said, we've had one dry day today, and what with it being the Church Fete tomorrow and the Gala starting on Sunday, I am really praying for a dry week!

What a contrary climate we have - hope the torrential rain is doing good and not damaging crops, etc. There are so many Fetes and other events at this time of year - such a pity when the weather ruins them. It is our local Carnival next Saturday - fingers crossed for a fine day. Hope Mother Hen will permit a photo of her babies soon. Keep dry!

Such a pity that there is so much rain! We had some beautiful weeks but now it rains more often than not. How interesting that you live in Cook's country! He is well- known
in both Australia and in New Zealand and had more diplomacy than the Dutchman Abel Tasman, who started a fight with the Maoris, because he misunderstood their welcoming ritual and thought they threatened him and his crew.

All that rain... hope you get some sunny days so you can dry out.
Where the chicks allowed in the run with the other chickens ?

What a great Mum, Goldie is. Has she ever had chicks before ?

cheers, parsnip

We have had loads of rain this month, but I'm hoping for a dry weekend because Ben and I are doing a kayak course. I'd prefer it if the wetness stated below the boat!

It's even raining buckets in the US.
Awful! My husband's poor brother has just lost his house to extraordinary flooding in Minot, North Dakota.

We had rain here today, too.
It's good that your hen is a good mother - those chicks will have a good chance of survival with such fierce protection.

We have been getting a lot of that rain too , here on Long Island. It just keeps on coming and coming. How lucky you are to have chickens.

I was sitting under that very expensive roof last Thursday. Actually wrote a poem whilst doing so!

The weather seems to be contrary all over the world from your comments.

Regarding Goldie - she has been a mother hen before - the eggs belong to various hens, she just sits on them. The chicks are not anywhere near the other hens - they are in the enclosed vegetable garden in a small hen house with a separate run. They will be quite old before they are let out because of visiting sparrow hawks.
