STOP PRESS. The fridge on the lane part 2.

For those of you who requested a picture of the fridge which some idiot dumped on our lovely lane (mine not to reason why!), well we walked there again yesterday and yes, it is still there. I took a long shot and a close up and it still looks just as awful as it ever did. I feel like sending the picture to the local paper but then I think that if someone dumped it out of spite then it would just give them pleasure to see it in the press.

Out to lunch with friends today and going past the three peaks - the day is brilliant so I might get shots of them. The last three times I have passed they have been shrouded in heavy cloud. So there will be a 'proper' blog later today.
Meanwhile 'enjoy' the shots of the fridge those of you who desperately needed to see it!

Why is it that those morons always dump stuff in beauty-spots, Weaver? I get it all the time at my rural workshop.

The really important thing with dumped fridges is that they need to have the doors taken off. It's actually big enough for a small child to climb in and close the door on themselves. And the magnets that hold the door closed are strong enough to prevent them getting out. Fridges are air tight.

Not to mention the very hazardous CFCs that are in the pipes at the back. Report it to your local council and they should come and take it away.

Its an indictment of modern life, all right. Fridges and other white electrical items are free to bring to the local recycling centres but we still see lots of dumped black plastic sacks from people who can't be bothered to pay the bin charge.

I had to smile when in his comment Dominic wanted to know if the fridge still worked! In the photo it looks quite good - perhaps it fell off the back of a lorry! I don't know if all councils do the same, but ours will collect, free of charge, any large household items if we leave them out at the front of the house, so there is no excuse for dumping anything - it only takes a local phonecall. Glad to hear your creativity is returning - it's horrid without it, I know.

I didn't get to write a comment on your first post. There have been two types of dumping under discussion: the thoughtless discarding of litter that someone has with them as soon as the contents have been consumed. As was mentioned on the first post, this is something more premeditated; someone has had to make a journey to dump this item. I agree that in trying to shame such a mentality it could be easy to have the opposite effect and satisfy them that it has disgusted someone. A comment to such a person or the public that you feel sorry for anyone who acts like this could be more effective.

I think you should send the pic into the paper because then someone will probably come and take care of it and let's face it, the person who dumped it, probably doesn't read the paper.

I have a friend that uses an old freezer for a warm place for her baby chicks. She has it lying on it's back of course. Maybe you, or someone you know, can reuse it and make something good out of something bad!

It looks to me like it may have fallen off he back of a vehicle.

Around here, Long Island, we have laws about putting a refrigerator or freezer out for the trash without taking the doors off. That person should be doing community service after they remove the refrigerator to a recycle location. I hope that someone makes a citizen's arrest. Children have been know to play and get stufk inside such machines. Please call some good Samaritan to come with a pickup truck and remove the offending fridge before more trees, this from a tree planter, but as a former teacher, get that thing offf to a shredder!

It's such a jarring image, the detritus of our modern lives, carelessly discarded against the beauty of your lane. It is as you suggest, Weaver, shameful.

Sorry, Well, I did want to see it and it is dismal.
Yes, send to local paper.
I echo all the things about taking doors off.

Thawing here!

I am just about to ring the council now to see what they can do about removing it. Thanks for the suggestion.

We had the same trouble on our dead end road, it is just off the dump rd and why they choose to dump on our rd was mystifing. We were able to contact several of them and give 24hrs to pick it up; you see because they left their mail etc with the garbage, so silly... My that did give some real satifaction when we went by the next morning and it was gone. Your poetry day sounded wonderful your discription of the day was so relaxing I could see myself there with you, lovely Delaine Gately
