Short of time.

What started out as an invitation to pop round later tonight for a glass of wine and a chat has rapidly developed into pop round tonight and eat with us. So I have little time to put a post on tonight as I chop and mix salads and carve up a hastily cooked joint of ham. Eight jacket potatoes have just gone into the Aga oven and an apple crumble waits to be put in a little later. Two bottles of wine are chilling and the table is set. There is something so nice about eating with friends on a Saturday night and sitting round the log fire chatting afterwards. And it is all the more enjoyable if it is done on the spur of the moment like this. If I had made a dinner party arrangement a fortnight ago I would now have been cooking an elaborate meal; as it is ham, jackets and salad will be just as enjoyable and far less work.
It has been a gloriously sunny day here today but with the wind in the North East it is very cold. Somebody from the US (sorry can't remember who but you were right) said the other day that snow was heading our way. SNOW? IN OCTOBER? It seems there are snow showers forecast for the coming week - shall have to get my thermal vests out of their summer hibernation.
Have a good weekend.

###Sloppy typing and reading., Well-spotted Jinksy and Peadar - both noticed I had written 'eating the friends instead of 'eating with friends'! Did the rest of you skim over it, as I did and read what you thought I had said? Or were you all too polite to point it out? Thanks anyway to J and P - I have corrected it above.
Incidentally - there was nobody young enough at that table to make good eating anyway! And here is the photograph to prove it.

What a pretty fall header!
We're having an impromptu dinner party tonight too.....friends are coming over with a truck load of hay and will stay to eat afterwards. Like you, I am enjoying the thought of a casual dinner - I picked up a big piece of raclette and we'll melt it with the requisite potatoes, pickles and salami, accompanied by salad, baguette and some nice Argentinian Malbec. Dessert is in the oven - brownies to be served with icecream and chocolate sauce. Easy peasy!

This sounds a lovely supper.
I wish I were invited too.
You are quite right impromptu entertainments are often the most fun.

This summer we have had a series of pot-lucks here where everyone brings something
so all the host/ess has to do is provide glasses and
the venue.

As for snow in October..........Hmmm not quite right.
Have a super evening.

Your word verification is NESTO

so I hope all is cosy in yours....

Saw on the noon news that Vermont received a foot of snow last night. Here along the river, it is sunny and 68˚F (20˚C) and quite lovely.

Enjoy your meal! Impromptu ones are almost always better.

weaver! food tells something of the story of the people who made it but really it's their presence that tells the most. my guess is that people visiting your home would almost certainly be delighted by a fried egg sandwich if only to have time in your company!!

Ham, potatoes in the jacket salad and a homemade apple crumble....
sound pretty wonderful to me.

Our Fall has appeared with a very early rain storm that zoomed through yesterday afternoon that surprised us all. We never get rain in October, much like your early possible snow.

Have a wonderful evening.
cheers, parsnip

Your impromptu supper party sounds idyllic and delicious Pat. Have a lovely evening. Did I hear mention of snow? Not yet please - I haven't planted all the bulbs.

It sounds like a wonderful meal to me. Southern Alberta and the western part of the province (mountains and foothills) had some snow yesterday but none here though it is a lot cooler of late. Enjoy your evening of good food and fine friends.

Ohhh - the 'S' word! I remember one year we got eight inches of the stuff about October 15th - and it stayed. In a normal year (is there such a thing)? we don't get a lasting snowfall 'till perhaps early December. I guess we better start thinking of putting the snow tires on. (Sigh).

Don't do it Weaver! Don't eat your friends!! You have all that lovely food. Anmd how can you contemplate sitting around the fire chatting after the terrible deed? Is the wine a nice Chianti? Will there be fava beans? I'm shocked.

My mouth is watering just reading about your lovely meal. It's the middle of spring over hear in Austuralia and it's been snowing on the mountains on the outskirts of Melbourne very unusual.

Glad you had such a pleasant evening, Weaver and that ham was the only meat on the menu!

Impromptu dinners are the best! your header is once again lovely. Crazy weather down under too, with snow in Victoria, almost unheard of in October! Cheers, Robin

Slow and careful cooking with plenty of onions and seasoning and we'd all be tasty Pat! I didn't notice your typing error - good job I'm not a proof reader. It looked a lovely spread and a happy gathering.

Wish you could have all been there - imagine a dinner party where we are all sitting round the same table.

You'd need a big table for all of us! I can bring a few jars of pickles if they'd go with dinner.....

Snow? Already?!!!

Looking forward to seeing pictures of your first snowfall!

Thanks everyone for joining in. No snow as yet - in fact it is a little bit warmer today. You will see from the photograph that I didn't eat anyone. Shall be more careful with my typing in future.

What a wonderful impromptu supper you had. I agree, it's always so much better when the meal is almost ad hoc. I laughed about eating your friends!
