Water, water everywhere.

I promise you that I will not bore you with my holiday snaps. The ones I put on for you to see will be themed and brief!
The whole of North America is huge - in every sense. The land is vast, the open spaces are vast, the meals are vast, the waistline gets bigger by the day - and there are huge bodies of water everywhere. These rivers and lakes really impressed us. As we drove along we constantly passed lakes large and small, with lots of wildlife on them. And we seemed to be always going over rivers - most of them with wonderful names from the North American Indian language.
I have just picked out a few I was able to photograph here.
The part of Canada we visited - Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto - is dominated by the majestic St Lawrence river, which flows out of Lake Ontario. We have been on it many times, touring the Thousand Islands or whale-watching. The volume of water it carries amazes us everytime we go. So the first two photographs are of the Toronto skyline from Lake Ontario and Ottawa from the St Lawrence river
The Niagara river is the most wonderful blue/green colour and flows so swiftly just after going over the falls
The Hudson river dominates New York too. We could see the section from our hotel where the plane landed a few weeks ago . The photograph of the Hudson is taken looking towards Brooklyn Bridge.
Finally, the Potomac in Washington. I seem to remember that there was a plane which crashed on there a few years ago, when people were being plucked out of the water by helicopter. Does anyone remember it - I am sure someone out there will tell us about it. The river in the photograph is taken from George Washington's home at Mount Vernon.
No more holiday snaps for a few days - I don't want to bore you.

Hello, Weaver of Grass.
This is the first time I've potsted a comment; I have just worked out how to do it.

I love your blog, it's like a breath of fresh air after trawling through some of the dire stuff out there!

Your opening photo of the gardens is great; I must plan my escape from Lancashire to see those gardens. I think my wife might be interested in seeing them.

Thanks for sharing
Found the photos to be impressive and interesting
Would you not think that we should be able to compete here, seeing as how we seem to get enough water raining down upon us. lol!

Weaver, as I started reading this I was thinking you had only gone to that States and I was shocked by all the water references. I was thinking, she should come up here. You can't turn around without bumping into a lake or big body of water. And I'll be...that's right, you were up here. Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you, Weaver, for wonderful watery photos. I can't get over the diversity of images. Perhaps we should all try to respond, haiku-style (or micro-prose), to one of them. We have all been waiting anxiously for your pictures and travel news. A few more photos, please (if it suits you, of course) - themed or otherwise!

Hello Weaver,

As long as you haven't come back with webbed feet, that's OK! Hadn't you seen enough water in Yorkshire?!

Are photos ever boring? I'm not sure they are...

Thanks for visiting, P P - have been to call on you. Call again.

Thanks, Elisabeth - shall do an article on Robert Frost soon - saw his grave and his lovely village too.

Thanks for the visit Prof Yaffle - I visited you but for some reason I couldn't get the comment box - so am saying here that I loved your jay - one of my favourite birds (along with all corvids - much maligned). I would quite like a jay's blue feather for my walking hat!
Call again.

Thanks Caroline - jet lag is still hampering my day - I really do wonder whether it is all in the mind.
The whole trip was exhausting as you can image with so much ground covered - but they are places we shall not see again, so we have all year to get over it!

Oh Raph - with your slim body and long neck I cannot believe that you relish large meals - I would have thought a handful of leaves would have been plenty!

Derrick - funnily enough we don't often get a lot of rain here in the Dales (it is pouring at present!) I think most of it falls on the Western side of the Pennines. In any case, riding along looking at water is not like standing in it.

Oh Rachel - I have seen some very, very boring "my holiday slides" in my lifetime!

I'm envious of you seeing Frost's grave. I love Frost. Since I was 12years old. I used to read his poems aloud all the time growing up. Probably drove Mom crazy. There is alot of water here. I live on a ridge top some miles from the main river here and I still hear the horns on the boats at night. I saw my first lightning bugs last night and it really seemed like summer here. You are here at a perfect time of year other than fall. Fall is the best by far. Can't wait to hear more.

Great travel photos! You are right, North America is vast. Sometimes there is WAY too much nothing between the good stuff, especially here in the U.S. West. I visited the Niagra Falls area a few years ago and loved all the bodies of water. That is what here is NOT enough of here. Please tell us more.

I don't think you could bore us Weaver. Those photo's are excellent and you always have something interesting to tell us. Encore! Encore!

...Nor any drop to drink. When I saw the headline in my bloglist I assumed it was about the fact its been throwing it down here all day!

Thanks for sharing the photos.

I expect that living in a landscape that is relatively compact, the vastness of waterways like Niagara must be amazing.

I thought that was the CN Tower!
Aloha. Great post today

Not boring at all, although I do know what you mean about boring holiday stories. The consensus is in, we all want more holiday snaps and stories.

Cathy - we thought the Spring colours, as the trees came into leaf, was almost as good as the fall.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Leenie - one of the things I love best about the US is all those vast empty spaces - especially in The Canyon Lands.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Robert Frost next Heather.

Dominic - agree about the rain here but then our gardens needed it - and I am sure you are pleased that rain means you cannot mow the lawns. Saw you on your run this morning but you were concentrating and didn't see my little red Honda!

The Weaver of Grass said...

Mistlethrush - yes Carol you are probably right - when I think of those huge rivers (and of course there are also Mississippi, Missouri, Rio Grande, Colorado, Delaware, Shenandoah - to name but a few) it makes our Ure and Swale seem very minor. I suppose it is all relative though.

The Weaver of Grass said...

Hi Cloudia! Yes - the CN Tower - you have no idea how difficult it is to take a photograph in which the tower is not leaning at an angle!

The Weaver of Grass said...

Gleaner - you shall get more in due course (probably on the days when I can't think of anything to put on my blog!)

How interesting all that water is, Weaver. I love the difference in colour, that blue/green is wonderful, like the sea. Lovely photos, not at all boring and I love to learn about these places.

I just love reading of your impressions of the states. Yes, it does seem we have lot of water...actually, we seem to have a lot of everything, both good and bad. And you're correct, our meal portions are outlandishly massive. Shameful, really. And most difficult for those of us wishing to remain normally sized!!
