This and that for Saturday.

Phew! That's all the washing, ironing and putting-away of holiday wear done; fridge re-stocked (although my fantastic daughter-in-law pretty well filled it for our return); holiday photographs sorted; jet-lag torpor more or less disappeared - so back to "normal" whatever that is.
The Summer heifers have come. At around a year old they are big girls already (destined, I am afraid, for beefsteaks). Look at that magnificent "backside" to the right of the picture! This is their first time out in the big wide world and, boy, are they wild. They have never seen a dog before, so our two send them into a frenzy and they gallop round the field as though they are in a Western. Twelve of them are Belgian Blue Cross and three are Blonde d'Aquitaine Cross - although I suspect their ancestry is a bit mixed as they are vari-coloured. After two or three days in the pasture their wildness is becoming tamed and their curiosity is taking over. The Border Terrier is not the tiniest bit afraid of them and marches up to sniff at their wet, pink noses.
Somebody did a blog the other day about little things giving us a lot of pleasure - and here is a perfect example. While standing, photographing the cattle I caught sight of a lone early purple orchid in the hedge bottom. At one time we had quite a lot but I am afraid the sheep have grazed them off. But this lovely specimen has escaped because it is under the hedge and behind the wire. What a joy!
Finally - a Saturday indulgence!! This morning, over my breakfast second coffee, I counted fifty four books which would not fit in any of my bookcases and were piled up on the floor. I intended to go to the supermarket and remembered that there was a Pine Shop quite near. I rang them, measured the space, went and chose a bookcase and ten minutes after I arrived home it was delivered. So guess what I am doing this afternoon? No prizes for guessing - I am sorting out my books. And how I am enjoying it.
So far I have found my poetry books and put them on the top shelf - filed in alphabetical order - starting with Anthologies and ending with RS Thomas. I'm sure I have a Yeats somewhere, but time will tell. And in case you are wondering, Rachel (More about the song on my blog list) you come between Carol Ann Duffy and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - not a bad spot I am sure you will agree?
So that is how my afternoon will be - sorting out all my books, putting them in categories and in Alphabetical Order - a few hours or pure pleasure for my week-end. Enjoy yours.

Thanks Weaver! In Dundee Borders I am sometimes next to Robert Frost and sometimes next to Stephen Fry's book about poetry...depending who has been browsing/tidying the shelves (I'm happy with either though!).

I was going to say "My idea of heaven" too!
So glad you are back to normal.
I think blogging is an excellent way to savor things that give us pleasure in a quiet way -- and that we feel we would like to share.
Can't think of a better way to spend Saturday afternoon than organizing books.

I'm so pleased your little orchid has survived - I remember dozens of bee orchids growing in a sheltered spot near my childhood home. What a lovely task for a cool blustery weekend - I love your new bookcase and the hare sculpture on top of it. Happy book sorting.

Golly, I wish I were in your shoes, sorting uot our books would take months, there are about 5,000 of the jolly things cluttering up two houses to overflowing.
It is sad to see the native Orchids being demolished, glad you still found one.

Oh goodness - a nearly empty bookcase. What joy! Am guessing it won't stay that way long.

It seems you are all green with envy at my sorting books afternoon. I can tell you they are sorted, filed in alphabetical order (for how long?) and carefully dusted with my feather duster (it is Tess's sole aim in life to get hold of that duster!)

What a wonderful afternoon you are going to have. The bookcase looks wonderful. I'm sure Rachel will be pleased with her 'spot'! How thrilling to have an orchid. We have a large spotted orchid and it flowers every year with many stems. There is also a smaller one with only one stem so far. We love them. They are a paler purple than yours.

I've just read that your bookcase is all sorted and filed. Wonderful and I laughed at Tess and the duster. Buster had mine! Buster ate the Duster....

My oldest phalaenopsis is in full bloom right now in the western window of the bedroom. Propped up with an oak twig. I really know nothing about these amazing flowers, but this one has been blooming regularly for ten years without ever being fed. Just watered once a week. So really beautiful.
And books...never enough bookcases!
