Betty's

To Northallerton today with my God-daughter - mainly to do a bit of shopping in a "proper" town - I get there so rarely. It is only twenty miles away but I don't feel like making the effort = I much prefer the countryside. But today I was chauffeur-driven and really enjoyed the treat.
In the days when Yorkshire was officially split into Ridings (it is still unofficially split!) then Northallerton was our County Town here in North Yorkshire. And, as such, it holds an important place in the psyche of our village.
The highlight of the visit was lunch at Betty's restaurant. Betty's is famous throughout the country for its restaurants in Harrogate, York, Ilkley and Northallerton. The decor, the ambience, the food, the service - all are exemplary. We dined magnificently - decided early on that we did not need a sweet, but then they parked the sweet trolley right next to our table. Well, I mean, how could we resist the coffee cake and the meringues???
I put on two photographs so that you get the general idea. Now it is time to get the tea for the farmer who did not partake of the excellent lunch, so blogging will - of necessity - be short today. Happy drooling over the sweet-trolley!

My friend and I always have afternoon tea at Bettys when we go to Harrogate and I go to the York one occasionally too. I agree with all that you say about them, the food, and especially the cakes and desserts, is excellent.

Weaver, that's not fair! Is that chocolate eclairs I see on the trolley? Have you ever seen a giraffe sit up and beg?

Ooh I remember Betty's. It was a must-do whenever I went to Harrogate for the Summer Retail Fair. It was my reward for having to spend four days buying Christmas merchandise in the middle of July !!
I told myself I'd earned that chocolate eclair after a thousand variations on a Christmas angel!

Ahhhhhhhhhhh Betty's den of temptation! We passed through your neck of the woods yesterday...Northallerton, Bedale, Hawes onto the Lakes, Shep Abbey! Great day! I did "wave" as we passed through !

That's it, you've inspired me: a posting about tea-shops is in progress!

You have a cruel streak Weaver! Fancy showing us the sweet trolley - I am trying not to drool into my keyboard.

Make us feel jealous, why don't you Weaver?! And the poor farmer, toiling all day for a crust and a bowl of gruel!

Droolings indeed.
I'm afraid I think desserts are the best bit.....maybe we should eat them first.
I do so love NOT cooking
I'm the sort of person who loves school lunches and even hospital food.

Glad you enjoy it too ROWAN.

Actually, Raph - come to think of it I don't think I have ever seen a giraffe sitting - let alone begging. Should think enclairs would be quite bad for giraffes - if that gives you any comfort.

Reader Wil - it is a lovely garden created by the family who bought the house some years ago - it is on steep sided land and they were told that it would be possible to grow Himalayan plants. It is open to the public for part of the year and I shall post photographs later.

Jo - thanks for visiting - glad I reminded you of eclairs.

I shall leave the rest of you drooling over the eclairs - I didn;t have one, I was too busy eating a meringue!
The farmer couldn't possibly have a meringue even if he had come with us as I am watching his waistline for him (it is easier than watching my own!)

What a wonderful day out you had and a treat to be driven. I am a total sucker for desserts and would rather skip a starter so I can fit in a pud! They look mouth wateringly good.
